Does anyone use their right hand technique or understand how they do it?

They play with such speed and accuracy. It can't get my thumb to move nearly as fast as Wes's. And it seems like Joe Pass simply picks with his index finger and thumb. Yet he doesn't ever seem to use them both on the same string.

Can anyone elaborate on their technique or link me to a lesson/book explaining it?

According to an episode of NPR Jazz Profiles (can be found under Podcasts in iTunes), Wes had a growth on his thumb.

As far as Wes goes I guess the best you can do is carefully study the videos of him. You can use Quicktime to slow down video.
I knew Joe Pass and know that he was aware of classical right hand technique but humbly viewed his his own finger-style technique as rudimentary compared to the masters. I did hear him explain his pick technique which was ...going from lower pitched string to higher he'd use economy picking but coming back he'd use alternate. Hope that helps.
