Question for Weber 12F150 speaker owners

So I have a Weber 12F150 4ohm 50Watt speaker in an opened back 112. I was going to use it for an upcoming gig (as I don't use it much). When I tried it with my Fender Bandmaster reverb, it was very present and punch, but really fizzy on the top end. I am thinking I still need to break it in. So how long does the 12F150 take to break in on average? I know usually after break in the highs smooth out, so can I expect that with my 12F150 as well?

About 20 hours of moderate volume playing should break it in. Top end should smooth out. Does it have any doping? That helps too. I had Weber break in mine and it is a great speaker. Full of warmth and punch with a nice gentle breakup atnhigher volumes. Nothing fizzy about it.

I have one in a Silverface Deluxe Reverb. Not fizzy at all. Warm and punchy.

used them a lot, never fizzy. try running some bass heavy music through it for a few hours, or use a variac if you have one-weber describes it. they normally sound great right out of the box. maybe its much more articulate that what your used to.

Mine has light doping. I wish I would have had weber break mine in when I ordered it a few years back.

I generally run my Bandmaster Reverb through 2 well broken in Weber 12A125A's with light dope, so that is what I was comparing the single 12F150 too.

I have the 50W with light dope in my Oldfield Deluxe, and there is nothing fizzy about it in that particular amp. May be a problem with the speaker or it may just not play well with that particular amp (I had a Tone Tubby in it before that was awful in that amp but sounds ridiculously good in my Concert, for example).

So your 12F150 wasn't fizzy on the high end right out of the box?

I will have to try the 12F150 with my brown Fender Super as well. I should probably mention the fizziness comes with using dirt pedals, not just playing clean. The highs are still a bit sharp when playing clean. I don't hear any of these issues with my Weber 12A125A's though.

I tried my 12F150 with my Fender Brown Super last night, the Super is a lot thicker and has more mids than the BMR. Anyway the fizziness was still there with the higher gain pedals, but not grating like when I used my BMR. I am still hoping the 12F150 will break in more and smooth out.

I remember when I first was trying the 12F150 I had the closed back on my cab and the highs were so harsh they were unbearable. Thankfully the opened back panel helped that a ton. I just have not used this cab in a good long while, so I forgot a lot about how it sounded.

There is some variation in the weber (maybe all speaker) manufacturing fwiw. I have a pair of 10F150T's and isolated them this weekend. They sound different... in my case one sounds good the other sounds really really good.

I am sure there is variation with speakers. I just hope my 12F150 after some break in turns into the speaker I want. Its not too far off now, hopefully those highs smooth out.

No, not at all. It was warm and a vast improvement over the Tone Tubby.

I put one in my DRRI, which is stock and bright already and while it wasn't fizzy it did have mid-scoop with a pretty sharp high end. Mine is the 12F150 8 Ohm with light dope.

I also just bought a 12A125A for my 5E3 and while it's not really a mid scoop sound, it still has a bit of sting in the upper mid-range. I ordered it with light dope, but it looks to be medium. I put this speaker into my DRRI and am hoping some break-in will help, but so far totally disappointed.

Both the of these speaker actually sound similar except the 12A has the alnico compression. I'm going to continue to break-in and experiment, but so far I'm not thrilled with either. BTW, the 12F is well broken in.

I have a 12F150 that I bought used from a forum buddy a couple years and I've put hundreds of hours on it as well through two different amps. I have to say, I wouldn't use the term fizzy in any way to describe the sound. Might not be my first choice for use with a dirt pedal to go beyond Super Lead type gain, but for Fender tones with and without a clean boost and/or with and without something like a Barber Direct Drive or an OCD, I think you could do a lot worse.

As others suggested, I'd hook it to a stereo/MP3 player/computer and run program material to it to help along the break-in process.

Interesting observations as I love the pair of 12A125A's I have, but they are well broken in. Hopefully I will get some time this weekend to get my 12F150 hooked up to my stereo and broken in more....

play the speaker as much as you can right now. my webers took quite a while to mellow out, but now that they have a few years on them, i'm glad i waited. in the meantime, try turning your treble controls back a notch from normal.

I dig mine in my Lil Dawg "WonderDawg", with my LP - perfect, my strat - sometimes a bit too much high end bite, not fizzy. I'm wondering about break-in or my pickup height, I've been almost strictly a tweed alnico player for the last year or so. So I'm looking for adjustments here and there.

With my Historic R8 and "burstbuckers", awesome. I love this speaker.

I usually get my webers pre-broken in, but I got this one from Jim at Lil Dawg, just stock: 12F150, 8 ohm, 50w, light dope.

don't forget: Sometimes "too brite" at home is "just right" at a gig. I have noticed this countless times.
