He had a granuloma removed last Thursday... vocal rest for a month. Forget singing... he can't even talk. Insert joke here. Hopefully his voice comes back stronger than ever.

I had a similar-but-different surgery done last year to remove 2 polyps from my vocal cords. I couldn't talk for 2 weeks and I almost went insane. I spent a ton of time on TGP... I'm guessing he will too... so good luck John... and get well soon.

I had the same surgery earlier this year too... yeah, my post count went WAY up during those 2 post-surgery weeks!

The good news is, he has his next album finished sans the vocals.

Once he gets well, add the vocals and here we go!

Hey all…

I wanted to give you an update on the granuloma just above my vocal cord. I had surgery this afternoon to remove it and am now on complete vocal rest for a month or more. It’s been a very long process in waiting to see if time was an alternative to surgery, but even given two weeks’ voice rest (along with many other approaches), there was no change for the better.

I should be frustrated but I can’t seem to stop thinking about beautiful things… I never thought I’d be wishing I could do what I love again; I stay in at night, picking guitar parts off of records and dreaming of playing on the big stage. The only difference between now and when I was 18 is that now I have this beautiful, meaningful record waiting for me when I can sing it.

Until then, I’m taking off. Going to travel the country, look and listen.

sincere love

JM

..... and we will at last know JM's super secret TGP alias!!!......

I'm a big JM fan so I'm not bashing or starting anything and hope him a speedy recovery but I've always wondered.....

If JM is a member here who posts shouldn't he have to abide by the same rules as everyone else? If so we should easily be able to pick him out with the affiliations he should have in is signature...

Two Rock, Fender, Martin etc......

I've known a few guys who have had to go through this and came back as strong if not stronger than ever. Good luck, Mr Mayer! Meanwhile, say it with 6 strings.

Love Battle Studies. Nice, gritty guitar tones, but also very descriptive, vivid lyrics. The guy is pretty poetic. A song like "Assassin" is a nicely penned lyric with a soulful groove.

I hope for a speedy recovery.

A guy of his musical caliber I'd like to see at 3-4 song instrumental EP cut in a months time. "The Surgery Tapes" or something along those lines. When you come out with something like that it usually becomes pretty memorable to those who get into that artists music.

Joanna Newsom's voice changed permanently after she developed vocal cord nodules. Some say it changed for the better, but still, it's a scary thought.

He's struggled vocally for years. It's interesting to to track his vocal progress over the years. His first major tour after Room For Squares really screwed him up. Listen to that album, then check out the live album that followed, Any Given Thursday.

I guess he got some vocal coaching after that tour because he was miles ahead when the JM3 live album came out and subsequent live performances.

I consider myself a fan but found Battle Studies to be my least favorite album yet. Didn't care for the light CaliRock sound he had going. I hope the next offering is better.

Amen. I enjoyed "Heartbreak Warfare" and "Assassin." I could skip the rest of the album without blinking though. I didn't care for the "Crossroads" cover; it seemed to come out of left field given the rest of the album. I can probably dig up 2-3 more tracks I found to be alright, but I was disappointed overall.

I really wanted to see a progression from Continuum tracks like "Gravity" and "Slow Dancing..." but for the most part it just wasn't there. You could follow a linear path from Room for Squares to Continuum with each album progressively better than the last. Battle Studies just felt like three steps backwards to me.

From the youtube clips I've heard of some of the newer stuff he's been working on, I'm still looking forward to the next album. Besides, everyone is allowed to have "that one album." (For reference, please see Nashville Skyline or Pop. :D)

I confess that Battle Studies is my first foray into a full album of Mayer's (I know his singles of course), so in a way I'm not well-versed enough to compare it to his other albums. But I am impressed by the innovative chord structure of "All We Ever Do is Say Goodbye" as well as the qualities of the others I mentioned. I do skip some tunes when I listen, but not many. I also like "Edge of Desire," both lyrically and rhythmically.

Up until recently, Mayer has not been on my radar. I have an unnatural aversion to anything new, so for me to buy a new CD was quite an event. Ha. And I wasn't disappointed.

Feel better man.
I love singing as much as I do playing, I'm sure he does too. That's got to be scary anticipating the surgery, only to be followed up by the recuperation time. I had to have a finger on my fretting hand operated on a few months ago and I was pretty nervous about it. Things went well, but not being able to play for a while was torture

Remember, this is just an excellent opportunity for an instrumental album.

Maybe with some random spoken-word on one track by Dennis Leary...
