I spent several days in the studio with Billy and I can tell you that he most certainly does not suck. Who knows what the conditions were like on that stage? I'll say that the man has "it". I'll also say that I've never owned a single ZZ Top record except for the one that he signed for me. He made a 'Burst with 8's through a tweed Princeton sound like heaven.

There's a capo on Billy's guitar (Trussart?). He either is in an unknown (to him) tuning,or somehow is not aware of what key he is in or the key of the rest of the band.
Man,that tone defines 'metallic'.

The Rev is helping Johnny with his method acting for an upcoming feature film on the life of the average TGP'er, next the Rev will show him how to post negative comments about Mayer and how he can get politician tone with a pignose and a pod.

I've lived by the credo, "It ain't braggin if it's true."
I'll go further to say, "It ain't slaggin' if it's true."

There ain't no easy way to say it, but that SUCKED. It would have sucked had you or I been responsible for that mess, and it sure as hell sucked for a guitar legend to be responsible for that mess.

I think something was amiss here. Seems like he didn't know what key it was in.

How about the fact that Billy had enough class not to "show up" Depp's band? Regardless of his playing that night.....the guy has done more on a guitar than anyone making comments here.

And the fact that Billy & Johnny are bazillionaire's due to the success in their respective fields means they "win".:rotflmao

Nobody's saying that BG isn't a legendary guitarist.
We're just sitting around scratching our heads wondering WTF happened.
Whatever that was, it was more than holding back from "showing up" anybody's band. Whatever he didn't wouldn't have "shown up" a high-school talent show.
I think he maybe wasn't aware of what key it was in and he couldn't hear his amp to tell he was in the wrong key.

Lots of vids from that night on YT if you look - but none I really had the patience to watch. All the typical You Tubers only mention Johhny Depp's performance in their comments because the average YTer wouldn't know Billy if he was biting their *ss.

One who was there said it was a great night. I suspect [having been there myself many years ago] the explanation is two words ... over-indulgence.

Cos that's the only way you can play in the wrong key without noticing when your guitar amp is right behind you[!]

Sounds to me like Billy's guitar is out of tune and Johnny Depp is sometimes playing notes that sound out of tune and it's a total mess.

It may not be Billy's guitar and it could even be in an open tuning with a capo.

All you have to do is HONESTLY look at the many clips of the Rev playing unfamiliar music is other people's bands to see how good a guitarist he actually is these days. He usually looks quite lost and out of place. He's really only comfortable and good playing the Part of ZZ's guitarist. He's just NOT a guitarist who can do anything else anymore.

my first look see, i shut it down after a minute. wow! that sucked!

i now watched and listened to the whole thing.

my opinion is depp sucks, it sounded like me playing and billy was just messing around with him. depp was playing all over bg when he was soloing(which was pretty good).

besides the fact that the sound quality sucked. i got better stuff in 72' with a portable cassette recorder.

Billy just looks uncomfortable. I am going with the theory(theories):

Not his rig.

Can't hear what's going on in that mess. Remember that the Top's stage volume these days is conversation level.

Didn't want to play, somebody just dragged him up there and he just wanted to hang and have a few cervezas....which might add to it as well.

We have all known the Rev to kick ass. Haters gonna hate.

Not true. I've been in the room when the man was recording everything from Hank Sr to Howlin' Wolf. He can jump into most situations just fine. There could be any number of reasons that this clip sucks.

Was he ever? And why should he want to be? His only mistake was getting up onstage for this. You really do play up or down to the level of those around you. Billy G. is no different. In fact, I doubt anyone is that transcendent to have elevated this above the level of pure crap.

cffluntouch
10-27-2011, 09:39 AM
Billy's problem is he is wearing pajamas, boots and a leather jacket. He obviously just got out of bed and was not in the frame of mind to play. He might have been running to 7-11 for coffee and smokes and got caught up in a jam.

V-Type
10-27-2011, 09:43 AM
Depp has been able too play well and for awhile.
He has had the time and the means too practice and take lessons of varying levels.
The guy played some fiddle with and for a female artist I know at the Viper room and she was amazed as well was the backing band at how good he really was for being Scissor Hands and 21 Jump Street.
Why not the guy studies for his acting so apply the same Pro approach too his hobbies?
Does he smoke Billy........No.
But he's pretty good.

Ha! I take it for what it is...just having fun. Ya can't do anything these days without someone recording it on a phone.

Fezziwig
10-27-2011, 09:47 AM
Yeah, my take was that Billy was having trouble hearing the music and couldn't quite put a finger on what key they were in -- I think he had a capo on the guitar that might have confused him too. Later in the clip he seems to have figured it out and plays some decent licks. Also, if you check some other clips from the same night, Billy is playing well, and his tone isn't bad.

Depp, on the other hand, is pretty bad in all the clips I saw. He's a bit better than a beginner, for sure, but he certainly isn't close to playing as well as your typical lead guitarist in a pub band.

Bluedano1
10-27-2011, 09:50 AM
I could not get past 30 seconds of this- Billy G looks lost or disoriented. Most of us could play something better with our feet! That has nothing to do with "his rig..." c'mon!

I stumbled across this a little while ago on Yahoo. The best part of this story is the article description:

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r213/dedwalleye/Depp.jpg

"The actor wows a legendary rock musician with his skills in a public jam session. Hear his smoking guitar solo."

Did I miss the "wow" somewhere? "Smoking guitar solo"?? Nothing about this made me think anything other than "Wow, that's sad."

Either they are both so smashed that they can't play or hear the key or they can' hear well enough to play correctly.

But, I saw a short clip on TV the other night showing Johnny being "helped" when he left a club.
He could barely walk but he was probably just tired, right?

Man, these days you can't get away with nothing because somebody is going to shoot some video of it.

Not surprisingly, Johnny has apparently been paying close attention to Keef, and mimics him well. BG is playing some of his stinging sig licks, although things are not in tune. Overall, as mentioned several times, a classic trainwreck. Oh well, that's the real world...tomorrow's another opportunity.

That was rugged by anyone's standards...except a few TGPers that will defend Gibbons until the bitter end.

I have to say, the last several times I've seen him play, his rig or otherwise, it's been...disappointing. Good thing he has nothing to prove to anyone. I mean that; Good thing.

I almost went down to the club that night. I knew Johnny Depp would be there (it wasn't announced, but it's pretty easy to figure out). I didn't know Billy would be there, but have seen him there a few times, so it's not a surprise. Glad I didn't do the extra work to stay up until 2, and deal with a crowded club to see THAT.

In fact, I saw Billy onstage there with Brad Paisley and Redd Volkaert one night, and he was quite outgunned. He and everyone had fun, but it was clear to me and most of us that he wasn't gonna hang with the twangers that night.

I wouldn't call that a trainwreck-just a goofy TV perforance with a thrown together band.

Why in the video is everything reversed - all the guitarsists appear to be left handed (they're not), the flag is reversed, and even the captions are reversed. It's like putting a negative in the enlarger backwards.
