Curious about Matchless amps.
1. Which is your favorite Matchless amp? Why? What other Matchless amps have you owned?
2. What music do you play and what guitar do you use and like thru your Matchless?
3. Any favorite Matchless sound clip or demo, plese post.
Cheers!

I don't own one, but I really like this clip of a C30.

You left out the real King of Matchless amps---the King Cobra.
I do think it is the king. Best amp ever for me. I have the prototype and a combo. Clips are in my sig.

The beginning tone is really nice...Once he starts soloing though, it reminds me of me, and that is not a complement:bonk

I really enjoy my Spit. Great little gigging and session amp. Reasonably light too, important to me these days.

I'll go with the Nighthawk since I own one. Great little amp!

Why does the Phoenix always get ignored?

Hard choice as I have a few. But, I always come back to my first Matchless - 93 Clubman 35. It just does it for me. I can do just about anything with this amp and a great OD pedal.

I have yet to play some of those listed,,,yet. Honorable mention to the Superchief?
How can you have a thread called "King of Matchless" and not include the one Matchless amp with 'King' in its name?
King Cobra gets my vote...and I've had more than a few of the above listed.

And I always thought Lightning ans Spitfire were one of the most popular amps...

Have used a Lightning a lot
but recently gravitated to Spitfire
nice warm tone
short clip shows tele into spit.
little rev and delay
Spit is almost cranked but note that I have a 12AY7 in V1
~half the gain of a 12AX7 and it still breaks up nice
pardon the crappy noodling...meant to demo the tone

From what I recall, I've owned two Lightning's, two Chieftain's, a DC30, and two Clubman's. The Clubman is my favorite. I tend to prefer big bottles and with a few tweaks, it's incredible with pedals! In it's stock format, the bass is more like a massive frequency and is not tight or percussive, so I replaced the rectifier tube with a solid state plug, and then I mellowed the amps attack out by changing the phase inverter from a 12AX7 to a 12AT7 (or a 12AU7....need to double check!). I used to own a '97 DC-30. Awesome sounding amp. Frickin' heavy though, about 90 pounds. And loud for a 30 watter. I sold it because my back couldn't take it any more. I miss that amp! :(

I like the Clubman because of its unique voice. To my ears it's got some Vox, Marshall and Hiwatt going on with lots of clean headroom. I like the fact that EL34's have some girth to them compared to EL84's (I was using a 65 London).
I had an Indy and it was great as well; definitely could cover every aspect of classic/hard rock.

I voted Avalon, with the caveat of it being the Avalon 35, rather than the 30. I planned on buying a Chieftain and got the Avalon 30 instead. Great amp.

I've got a DC30 and Lightning. I play classi rock type music. . .not high gain. I use mainly single coil guitars with my Matchless amps. . .Ric 360's, teles and a strat.
My favorite is the first channel of the DC30. It's got a pair of mismatched speakers and gets very thick tone. The Lightning is the little brother to the first channel of the DC 30, and has only one 12 inch speaker, doesn't weigh as much and is 95% of the tone of the DC 30.

Why does the Phoenix always get ignored? For the same reason as the Avenger. Great as they are, there are very few around. That's fine with me though, it places me as an Avenger owner/advocate in a most exclusive club! ;)

I love my Sc30.
Also the Indy.
My problem is that I haven't played the clubman or chieftain.
