View Full Version : Recommendations for High Power 10"s for a 2-10 Amp?

So I just snagged a 1970's Musicman 210HD One Thirty combo that is on it's way to me. These originally shipped with MM-branded special design Eminence alnicos. This amp has some version of Jensens stuck in there. I do not expect that these are going to cut it for me because the whole purpose of getting the amp was to be able to get outrageous clean tones at higher volumes and the Jensens are going to be under-rated for this amp. I can only assume a previous owner blew the originals and was being cheap or specifically wanted more speaker breakup.
So here are some ideas -
Old-school high power used - expensive, possibly thrashed and needing reconing
EV Force 10
EV EVM10 - very hard to find
JBL 110? Not sure which versions are less ice-picky
New production - cheaper, lighter, not thrashed
Weber Cali 10 Paper Dome 80W
WGS G10C 75W
Emi Ragin Cajun 75W
?
I am assuming that a pair of 75-80W 10s are not going to blow with the 130W RMS amp but how much earlier am I going to get speaker breakup?
Recommendations?

A pair of 1058's would work. They're rated at 75 wrms but they will take a bunch more. Another option would be first to determine what impedance the amp likes. Put the amp in a head cab and run it into a 4X10. I don't know of another way to get loud clean with this one.

Jensen Blackbird 10's are 100 watts, and sound great!

Thanks for the suggestions. The Fanes and Jensen Blackbirds would cost more than I paid for the amp so however nice they are I'd probably pass. Anyone try JBL E110s? There's an eBay seller who has a bunch of them for not too much $. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180717614788&category=47095&_trksid=p5197.c0.m619#ht_588wt_1398

...my 1969 Super Reverb has 4 x JBL/D110F's, but finding them these days is nearly impossible.

That particular amp is upper clean... And if that's what you're fter, then cool. The JBL e110's are lean and bright (I don't think they are ice pickey). If your not looking to play that thing clean full out, an alnico (celestion gold) would work well. I'd look at the tone tubby red alnico for one warmth if it were me.

I like bright but I also like a full, tight bottom end - so when you say the E110's are "lean" does that mean they will be bass light? As for alnicos I've wanted to like them but I always end up with ceramics because of the tighter bottom end.
I recommended the Fanes for exactly the reasons you've stated.
No other speakers I've tried hold together like my Fanes

Good lord, I was in a hurry and apple helped me spell more than I like. Sorry...

Errors corrected above. I think the e110's are pretty well balanced with plenty of low end... But it's tight and clear low end, like a ten should have.

Epi Ram Rods are loud and clean. Based on Jensen C10Q. Has a thicker cone so they do not break-up like old Jensens.

The original Jensen Neo10-100's are great and uncolored, so if you like the tone of your amp they'll transduce it well. If you want to tame the highs, then a hemp cone like the Emi or Tone Tubby 10's might be the ticket. Many choices, depending on ohmage and wattage.
