I'm trying Handbrake right now. I'm converting a DVD to mp4 for my kids to watch on an iPod. The program says that it will take 10 hours. This seems a bit long to me! I'm looking for a decent program for my MacBook Pro, hoping for sharware, but not having luck. Any recommendations??

Thanks!

You've either got a slow computer, or you're not compressing the file. Or, that DVD has 8 hours of content on it. I use Handbrake all the time on my Mac.

Thanks for your reply.

I wasn't very clear, sorry. I'm at work so I'm using Handbrake on a pc. However, you are probably right about the compression. I started it quickly before I left my desk, maybe I didn't set it up correctly. It's a 43 minute Sesame Street movie for the ipod. This should have been a much quicker operation?

Handbrake has presets for what type of file you want it to spit out. Make sure you're using the one for iPod. No video process is quick and much of it has to do with your computer not the program.

Thanks again for your replies. It actually finished 5 hours sooner than it anticipated!

Lesson #1 on software usage: Never believe any time estimate put forth by the software on its expected completion.

Lesson #2 on software usage: Bite your tongue and see Lesson #1.

Ok, I used MacTheRipper (I think thats the name) to rip a VIDEO_TS file from DVD, then handbrake to convert the file for the ipod. It worked like a charm. Hopefully the kiddos will appreciate a little Elmo on the plane!

I just put the Lord of the Rings movies on my boy's Ipods with Handbrake and it did take almost 2 hours each to run, but I rip them to the HD first with DVD Decrypter and its an older P4 PC (1g ram)
