Any thoughts who among the current crop of famous/semi-famous post punk-influenced acts move you everytime you hear them?

The best and most basic explanation that I'm half making up and half lifting from something Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke said is that post punk is music that's informed and influenced by the original wave of punk bands but generally came after them and allowed much more into their sound than that original group of punk bands. Killing Joke, for example, takes a TON of influence from reggae and some other melodic, beat oriented genres of music.

Now, to answer the OPs question.

You can make the argument that Swans is post punk but Michael Gira's so free and experimental with genre and the very idea of what music is that I think they can be both a post punk band and a band that was influenced by post punk.

Television is actually "pre-punk" since they were the first band to play at CBGB's, something like a year before The Ramones.

In my mind the most essential "post-punk" acts are PIL, Gang of Four, The Fall, and Joy Division. Then there was a whole slew of bands that started punk and edged into a kind of neo-psychedelia, including Echo and the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, Teardrop Explodes, and even, in a sense, early U2.

cheers guys - would u consider the national, the editors and the killers to be good post-punk influenced bands? I certainly agree that Gang of Four and Joy Division are two of the best post-punk bands ever.

Legendary bands, for sure, but hardly what would be considered among the "current crop." Also, in the case of Westerberg and co., I don't think I would consider them a post-punk act, although that term has always been vague.

The 'mats have been defunct for somewhere around 20 years now, and The Pixies have been rightfully milking the nostalgia gravy train for the last several years, after more than a decade of inactivity.

Sorry, missed the "current crop" language. Not sure if the term "post-punk" really has any meaning in 2011.

Again, there is no questioning the iconic status of MoB but they are more like an actual post-punk band, not one that was influenced by post-punk, and they hardly qualify as a current or newer band.

I forgot to read the 'influenced' part of the subject.. Oooops!

Whats the cutoff date for post-punk? Are we talking about bands that were influenced by the first wave of post-punk bands (wire, MoB, Joy Division, etc.)?

Would bands like Galaxie 500, The Pixies or Radiohead meet the criteria?

I think the OP is looking for current bands that were inspired by post-punk bands, so Galaxie 500 is out (although they were a phenomenal band), and The Pixies should be out since they are not really making new music.

Radiohead could certainly qualify, as could bands like Interpol and the Editors.

Operation Ivy is a punk influenced act, not a post-punk influenced act.

Another suggestion: The Men . Killer band from New York City. Also, Black Congress from Houston TX

Both bands catch a lot of flack, but I enjoy Interpol and Franz Ferdinand. Popified Post Punk.

I'm surprised The Cure hasn't been mentioned.

When I think of "post-punk", I think of mostly English bands that injected art into the punk aesthetic. Not really New Wave, but more dark and some of it kinda goth. Joy Division, Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Siouxie and the Banshees, early U2 and Echo and the Bunnymen, Southern Death Cult. Stylistically, the guitar sound is droney, echoey, that "one-finger" style. I also think of the cool bass stuff you hear in New Order.

Deer Hunter is a current "post-punk" band I've been diggin' lately...

The thing i dont understand about the question is that really ANYBODY could be 'influenced' by post punk and not sound like that style at all..

Deer Hunter was a good 'modern' suggestion/take on the question.

Op Ivy is also hardly recent by musical act standards, and is not a current act.

Good point actually - I guess what I mean is are there any acts currently who wouldn't be out of place if you put them on a bill with the cure or joy division? I have been hearing some bands theses days and they make me want to go through my record collection and look for a song that I'm sure i've head back in the day lol

FIXED.

Some of this is a bit on the poppier side of things, but here goes.

I had a really hard time choosing just one Editors song, because everything they do is absolutely lovely, but this one is just the most powerful, beautiful thing...

Gotta go with the Replacements.

Too quirky & goofy to be a mainstream or formulaic rock band, and not hardcore enough to be a punk band.

Westerberg wrote a shitload of great tunes set to an incredibly diverse backdrop of musical styles from rock, power pop, punk, drunken blues to ballads, a one-off jazz tune, Americana, etc.

They've influence everyone from Green Day to Liz Phair & thousands of bands that never made it too far out of the garage, but still tried because of the Mats.

The best post-punk stuff to me came from bands who actually were around for the punk scene, though many, many great ones came immediately after.

The Cure, Siouxsie, Bauhaus, Wire, Joy Division/New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Clash (I put them in there because their first album was punk and that's about it), Public Image Ltd., etc...

Then there were the bands that could be lumped in there that started a bit later like The Smiths, The Chameleons, Duran Duran and other "new wavers"...

Here's a shocker. Here we have Joy Division, the very definition of a post punk band:

And the somewhat recent Kings of Convenience that I got into for some poppy fun through my enjoyment of Feist:

Speaking of bands influenced by Joy Division...

This is what happens when you mix Joy Division and black metal. It's bizarre and unlike almost anything I've ever heard.
