Here's my idea.

Take the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster (full review and some gut pics here (http://tiny.cc/6cs3f))

Could I a) put P-rails in

and b) could I buy a lower Jaguar switching plate/system and put it in and wire it up somewhat like this (http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/artist-interview/thrice-p-rails/)? *In this link is a link to the wiring diagram that the artist used as a basis for this mod.

I'm curious if it would be a poor mans way to do this. I figure the J Mascis model should work because it unlike the other lower end jazzmaster models, has the upper controls/switching already. The first link seems to show that there is enough of a cavity under the pickguard to put the lower Jaguar switch in.

A): The Jazzmaster has P-90 style pickups in it, and the P-Rails are the same size as full humbuckers, which are larger than the P-90s. It can be done, but it's not going to be a drop-in swap.

What do most people do in this situation, file the openings larger?

That is your most common option, otherwise finding a pickguard already cut out for humbuckers. The other thing is the routs in the body-they are probably going to be too small, also.
