My wife complains that I "snore like a banshee"....and I have no doubt that she's right.....but what I can't figure out is why I can hear her say to me "Hey! roll over!" and yet I can't hear myself snore....at all.
What's up with that?

Your mouth anatomy. Having a low, thick soft palate or enlarged tonsils or tissues in the back of your throat (adenoids) can narrow your airway. Likewise, if the triangular piece of tissue hanging from the soft palate (uvula) is elongated, airflow can be obstructed and vibration increased.
Being overweight. Extra weight can build up in your throat and contribute to narrowing of your airway.
Alcohol consumption. Snoring can also be brought on by consuming too much alcohol before bedtime. Alcohol relaxes throat muscles and decreases your natural defenses against airway obstruction.
Nasal problems. Chronic nasal congestion or a crooked partition between your nostrils (deviated nasal septum) may contribute to your snoring.
Sleep apnea. Snoring may also be associated with obstructive sleep apnea. In this serious condition, your throat tissues obstruct your airway, preventing you from breathing. Sleep apnea is often characterized by loud snoring followed by periods of silence when breathing stops or nearly stops. Sometimes, complete obstruction doesn't occur, but rather, while still snoring, the airway becomes so small that the airflow is inadequate for your needs. Eventually, the lack of oxygen and an increase in carbon dioxide signal you to wake up, forcing your airway open with a loud snort or gasping sound. This pattern may be repeated many times during the night. To be diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, these periods when breathing slows or stops must occur at least five times an hour.

Thanks FB....I'm not curious about the phenomenon itself....I'm just fascinated that I'm unable to "hear" myself snore...after all I can hear myself talk :huh

Just another example of women messin with yo head! Seriously, I'm headed in for a sleep study. They hook you up and monitor your breathing thru the night. My doc thinks poor sleep could be bringing my blood oxygen levels down.

My last two girlfriends complained about this.
Perhaps I should cut back on the alcohol-consumption and quit smoking.
My last girlfriend would just start pushing me trying to roll me over.

I've gotten the same thing from my wife. Apparently, you don't wake up from your snoring because you are used to your own sounds and tune them out.

Yup, so I'm told by the wifey. So when I wake up from a nap I say "I wasn't snorring!".

There was a time that I would never admit to snoring. But my roommate and his fiance set up an overhead mic and his Tascam and recorded me. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's the one time I ever snored.

I've been told I do it and I'm pretty sure they're right. I'll wake up with the back of my throat raw. Every once in a while when I'm drifting out of sleep, or in a dream I'll hear a pleasant low hum in the background. One time the humming noise turned into me snorting awake, so it probably doesn't sound that pleasant outside my head!

I snored like a chainsaw until I got my cpap. It's been 10 years since I snored last.

My g/f sometimes dreams that I snore. I admit I do, but just to see for myself once I suspected her of doing this, I kept awake by playing on my phone and sure enough, a couple of random times, she said "Stop snoring!"
She doesn't believe me that I pulled this experiment and that she acted this way.
Women. lol!

Go get a sleep study done, seriously.
My wife is a heavy snorer and had a small stroke because of sleep apnea (never knew she had it)
She's been sleeping with a CPAP machine for 5 years now and doesn't snore a bit.

Yep! just spent the night at a local hospital, hooked up to a bunch of machinery; i've apparently got 'mild to moderate' apnea, as determined by the number of times i stop breathing/hour
The CPAP machine's on order at this point, so i can't say how that'll go yet - But the thing is, I'm not, at present, a snorer!
When I was morbidly obese, I sure was, tho'! Woke my ex-wife constantly
Having lost over 50 lbs., the snoring stopped completely, but my current wife became concerned about the breathing problem, so I did the test
Corrective surgeries can help snorers, but there's no real way to effectively tone or strengthen the soft muscles/tissues of the palete/throat at the root of the problem
My current wife also snored a bit when we first got together, but after losing about 30 pounds, the problem's almost non-existent now!
