Seriously, who picks these performers. She hasn't (if ever) been relevant for 20 years, has she?

It couldn't possibly suck any worse than the Black Eyed Peas did.:peenut

She's relevant to her genre the same way Aretha is relevant to hers, even in the absence of any new records. I like Madonna infinitely better than Black Eyed Peas or Lady gaga.

The Who, Paul McCartney, etc. The Super Bowl is not exactly known for selecting cutting edge performers that are up the minute in terms of cultural currency.

Man, what's with the hate? Madonna is a staple in popular music whether you think she's "relevant" or not. I don't listen to her music but it should be a fun performance.

Agreed, plus she is likely to put on a big show and she has almost 30 years worth of hits upon which to draw.

We demand currently relevant performers! Screw The Who and Madonna, the crowning glory of Super Bowl halftime shows was Britney Spears. Or was it the Black Eyed Peas? No wait, Justin Timberlake.

The SuperBowl Halftime "performance" is either a trainwreck or a live performance, or a lipsync travesty. It's all surface, no substance. Madonna is perfect for that setting.

This wouldn't have happened if any of us TGPers had taken the gig when it was offered to us.
Now look what happened.
We have only ourselves to blame.

the list of potential performers has got to be pretty small when you consider over 100 million people are going to watch and you have a very diverse viewing audience as well. Madonna makes sense in that she is universally known with equally well known songs, which is exactly what they have to have. She's the #2 alltime Billboard hot 100 artist.
It's a challenge to think of newer artists who could pull off the SB show. Coldplay? Kanye/Jay-Z? Foo Fighters? Katy Perry/Gaga/Rhianna? Some combination of country artists?

They really did a great job. I thought that the Boss did too. Prince of course was spectacular in the rain.
It can be done. :)

Erm, he said "newer". AC/DC was 3 years into the Brian Johnson era when Madonna's first album came out.
Mind you, they'd likely put on a good show--but they're hardly a newer act than Madonna.

Its all crap.
Why not put Madonna and Gaga on the stage together?
Yeah I know, I'm a genius heh
Ill say I enjoyed the performers that I would normally enjoy. Seems a few of you saw the same SB's heh.

They played live. I sincerely doubt that Madonna or whatever her name is can sing live...
The big excuse for all of these nuts is "but she is dancing... she can't sing live when she is dancing..."
Check out Pink bitches... she sings live and swings from a trapeze...
Madonna = Millie vanilli, = Paula Abdul= new kids on the block = etc etc etc

I grudgingly admit Madonna did a good one here. Sings live and stays classy.

OK that was live but I have heard her fake so freaking often. All of her early singles were varispeed tracks... she sings LOW... she does not have a range like (like a virgin)

Another reason to not watch.
She sings live, but she doesn't sing so well. But I've grown to like some of her music. The records that were produced by Mirwais are very good. She definitely is going to come up with superior ideas for the half-time show--she is a great mind in that respect.

I love all the weekend warriors in here talking about how this pop culture icon can't sing. Is she the greatest voice of her generation? No. Is she a very talented vocalist? Yes. Is she more talented than most of the people on this board and/or their lead singers? I'd venture to say yes since most of us on here are not music superstars who's careers have spanned multiple generations.

Is there REALLY any sense to a thread like this at all?
More superficial TGP generalization, judgment and hate that will continue ad nauseum until the game is actually played, followed by tons more bandwidth taking apart everything about the show from her singing to her makeup to her body.
I'm not a fan of her music, but I'm a fan of her promotional abilities. Smart lady that one. I often see the word "relevant" bandied about. Relevant to what? And who decides? Who here at TGP has anything more than an opinion. Nothing wrong with that, but who decides who's relevant for everybody else?
