...Looking for a cheap small jazz amp just for fun....not looking to spend big $$$, but up to $400 is ok.

    Roland cube 80?
    Fender Mustang III?
    Fender Frontman 212?

....looking for BIG bass response and smooth midrange/treble...

(I know about Evans, Hendrickson, & Jazzkat, but that's too much $$$)

My cheapie jazz amp is a Peavey Backstage Plus (45 watts) with a Lil Buddy speaker and the ICs changed out to Burr Brown OPA2134s. Nothin special, but sounds real nice for jazz. Reliable as a hammer.

Haven't tried the Mustang, but the Cube fits the bill.

Used Blues Jr - $300 all day long.

If you're set on solid state, the Cube is okay.

Your best bet if you want warm tone and a little headroom would be to hunt down a used Music Man. The RD50 50 Watt 1x12 would fit the bill. Pretty light, too. Other options as well. Great amps to be had for little money.

My first choice would be just to peruse the used amp selection in your area, but in a new amp, check out the 1x15" Ibanez Wholetone -- it's sort of a more affordable Polytone, and that 15" speaker will deliver the tone you're looking for.

I've heard a lot of jazz guys like that cheap little Kustom Tube 12 with the 12AX7...

Super light and has a warm, clean jazz vibe. Kind of a sleeper, appears to be a cheap crap practice amp but actually sounds way better than the specs. The Celestion in there gets top reviews. I assume the 12AX7 is a dual-use preamp/phase-inverter element.

I use a blues jr. Works well for me. I almost went with the cube but I'm a tube guy.

The little Roland does a killer JC imitation. (Why are we not surprised by this?) Lots of classic jazz tones there.

    Peavey Bandit.

Or a bass amp. Bass amps work very well for jazz guitar.

I like the mustang III but anything will work- I like the idea of having a 15 inch as well.

I upgraded my Cube 30 to a Cube 60 - $200 used. Great for practice and gigging. My Benedetto archtop w/ floating pup sounds super clean and multidimensional to it, and it handles the M9 stombox modeler very well too. I have a modded Blues Jr. too, which I like for electric guitars - but it doesn't do the archtop well, while the Cube handles the semi hollow and solids well.

look for a vintage (analog) roland cube. Will probably be quite cheap, and will FAR exceed the new digital cubes.

all the jazz cats grab for the vintage cube, while we have a fender vibrolux, blackstar ht5, fender mustang and cube 30x available as well.

I would personally recommend a used Blues Jr, but I saw a guy this past weekend playing jazz on a 335 through a Roland Cube with some sort of digital effects processor and it sounded very good.

roland jc-120 can be easily found for under $400 used. great jazz amp. no way I'd use a blues jr for traditional jazz sounds (wes montgomery, grant green, etc). not saying it can't be done. just way low on the list of what I'd grab for those tones.

    Cube 60 for my archtop.
BillM/C-Rex Blues Junior for the others. Gorgeous acoustic archtop tone sucks thru the BJ, but the other guitars sound very good including the Eastman thinline.

I've heard very good things about the Fishman Loudbox - would like to try that with the archtop.

I think a used Peavey Bandit or a Cube will be the easiest to find. A Peavey 60 watt bass combo would probably also do the trick for under $150.
