Hey folks. I am looking at buying a used Fernandes strat that is supposedly from the 90's. It is not local so I asked the seller where it was built and for the serial number. He tells me that Fernandes used stickers and that he has no way to find out where and when it was made....anybody out there know something he doesnt?

    Thanks

Post pics. I can usually date them by headstock shape and type of logo on it. Sometimes Fernandes marked its MIJ guitars on that sticker, so if it's gone it doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't made in Japan.

Also, later 1990s Fernandes can have date-stamped necks (bottom, back).

I will try to get a pic this weekend. It was a silver strat style with a RW board that had a vintage style bridge and modern tuners. It did not have the date stamp on the neck plate like some that I have seen. The neck was VERY worn on the back, but that doesn't always indicate age. The headstock looked like this: [IMG]

That's a headstock logo and shape used from about 1997 to early in the 2000's (maybe mid-2000's). There may be a date stamp on the back of the neck, like this:

Mine also had the same headstock shape/logo.

So it could be from Japan...or maybe not. It is probably impossible to tell without removing the neck.

the ones i liked, and endorsed, were the early and mid 90s models, LE2 strat style.....

the headstock logo was gold and black.....not just a flat black logo as seen above.

the MIJ fernandes guitars can be a real STEAL, many of them sell for $200 or so, and with some decent pickups and hardware, can be REALLY good guitars!

Mine wasn't from Japan. It did have a serial sticker (on the back of the headstock) but no "Made in Japan". My assumption is that if it doesn't specifically say it, then it probably aint. It could be Korean also.

These days the guitars from the mid-80's and earlier (with Fender-style headstocks) are going up in price. But you can still score a later eighties Fernandes for under $300 and that is truly a steal, as they are top quality guitars. I have a 1988-ish Tele that is to die for, and its stock pickups sound fantastic.

The one I just sold, while not MIJ, still had excellent build quality. It had a great neck too. If it didn't sell, I was going to upgrade its pickups and keep it.
