    IMPORTANT ADDITION!

I admit and apologize for underestimating some folks' love of Jerry's SG tones. It's all good! If those are your faves, note so in your individual posts. From time to time, I'll add up those votes and we'll count 'em, too.

(Thank goodness no votes yet for the Guild. ;) )

Head up - this is a public poll (at least I tried to make it so)!

Yes, I know there were multiple iterations of many of Jerry's guitars! For this poll, when you vote for an axe, all iterations are included in your vote. Perfect poll choices? No, not perfect, but it would get too complicated otherwise. Also, yes, I know Garcia played a variety of Guild, Gibson, Fender, and even Ibanez guitars, too. Those are excluded deliberately. EDIT: I now wish I'd included at least Jerry's SG. If the software here would allow me to add it in after the fact, I would. Sadly, it won't. :(

Vote away! (Perhaps unpredictably, I'm leading off with "Travis Bean" - I just love that full '77 tone. :D )

I'm voting Alligator...but I would prefer the late 60s SG tone. Though I love the twang he got on the strat. I still miss the 5 headed monster of the Dead though...pre-altamont. So I like SG tone by far the most. What did he play at Red Rocks in '78? That would be my other choice

I'll have to go with Tiger, just love the early '80's tone, especially in JGB.

I love the SG tone as well, but went with Alligator as a second choice.

Tiger for me. It's the one I saw him play the most in the mid to late 80s.

    -Motion denied ;).

Sorry, but my favorite is what he used on David Crosby's solo album ('If only I could remember my name'), which being around 1970, I guess it's the SG. It's the epitome of that clean but bright tone and of course his phrasing and note choice, that no one else ever had or has now.

Wolf, for me!....I love the others, as well, but that's the guitar that makes me want to call up Moriarty and drain my checking account!

Sorry back atya. I loved Zappa's SG ... Jerry, well, he played one early in his career until he learned better.

(Pulling your leg, mon ... partially. :) I love his SG tone on Dark Star. But for most Dead tunes, say like Ramble on Rose? No, I wouldn't care for that SG tone whatsoever.)

This being said, w/2 such responses already, if the software allowed me to do it, I'd add SG to the list but alas, it does not (or at least I can't find an option for it). So view the poll, if you'd be so kind, as asking you for your favorite among the listed options.

I would have to say The Wolf, just something special about that one for me.

It was the SG from Anthem of the Sun, Live Dead, and Aoxomoxoa, then the Strat on Europe 72. After that, I am most fond of Wolf.

I must say, I'm surprised by the early depth of the SG love here. It doesn't come up on many the Dead forums like this. Do you guys think I should delete this thread now and start a new poll w/the SG? I usually won't do that but if there's a lot of Dead SG love here, maybe I should!

Tricky. Remember, he's got the TB-500 ("The Enemy Is Listening") 3-single coil model from Fall 76 through Spring 77, but uses the refurb'd Wolf for the Fall-Winter tour.

It's also tough to decide which Wolf sounded best... along with the change from a slight variation on the Alligator electronics to the added effects loop and eventual humbuckers, you've got to account for the sound because of the on-stage monitor system with those compressed (maybe congested is the better word) double-headed mic's in '73-74. Great playing, not such great sound on the reels.

What guitar on Touch of Grey? Rosebud, right?
    Beautiful sounds...
I know, it's their big hit, but I still love the tune. Such a positive vibe and JG's singing/playing is lovely.
