I'm starting to sort of wander outside of guitar territory, musically speaking. I've been starting to learn lap-steel on my friend's lap steel guitar, and I've just discovered 12 string MandoGuitars - those things are sweet, I'm GASing for one. Does anyone know of anything similar to a guitar but with a different sound?

If the OP really does live in a pineapple under the sea, they need an Ukulele. Probably several!
If you're branching out from guitar, anything with strings and frets are fair game- Octave mandolins, mandola, mandocello, bouzoukis, saz, tenor guitars, plectrum guitars, banjos, cuatros, tiple, balalaika. The list is just about half done! You can string 'em backwards or alter the tunings to be more guitar friendly, too.

Kidding aside, how about a harp guitar?

Thanks for the input everyone. A harp guitar really sounds interesting.

I'd go straight to mandolin. Huge amount of depth in that instrument.

He makes electric 5 string mandolin guitars. I have one and it's killer. He makes them with neck thru construction so the sustain is amazing. Worth a look.

How about a Balilika, saw these guys busking in Salsburg, Austria a few months back.

Only three strings, they sounded a bit like a mondolin but only single strings.

Check out the guys bass on the right!
