Is it worth fixing my broken/disabled Shure SM57 & SM58 microphones?

I have a couple of "dead" Shure gig microphones and I'm wondering if it's worth trying to fix them. I realize that SM57s and SM58s only cost $100 but you can never have too many microphones, especially ones like these!

Mic #1 - SM57: NO SOUND AT ALL

I took it apart and inspected it but all of the wires (XLR connector/capsule connector) are securely in place. What else could it be?

Mic #2 - SM58: SOUND IS VERY THIN (like a megaphone)/NO BOTTOM END AT ALL

I used to be able to get this back to normal by banging it but that doesn't work anymore!
Is the capsule dead? Is it even worth fixing?

Thanks!

You can buy either of those mics used for $50, so base the cost of that on your assessment of whether or not whatever you're going to pay to have them fixed is worth it or not.

Send them back to Shure. They have a flat fee for 57/58 repairs. I think it's 40 or 50 bucks. If they can't fix it, they'll just replace it with a new one.

$55 flat rate, including shipping, from Shure. Typically they replace them with a brand new one rather than repair them.

It sounded good to me bro. You definitely are getting good tone out of that rig and you SHOULD be questioning the thousands you have tied up in all that other gear. I think I need to go look in the mirror now.

many thanks

by the way, i think you'll get a kick out of what i had to slap together and mix yesterday. it's referenced in another thread, but it SOUNDED fantastic, and i'm still getting calls and compliments. it's almost hilarious considering what i had to use.

I sent a SM58 back to Shure a few years back for repair. For the $55 they sent me a brand new one. Kudos to their customer service!
