Interesting, John was playing with two Sunn amps instead of a Marshall, and sounded more distorted than usual.

It would be WAY better without Jan Hammer.

![]() Hammer was a HUGE part of the MO sound, and a kick ass player |

Yes, in two significant ways, his ensemble playing enhanced, but his soloing detracted. I can't stand his wimpish noodling, it simply kills the whole effect the band had going dead in it's tracks. My goal in respects to the original MO is to find a recorded show that he didn't participate in.

Listening to this for any length of time drives me totally insane, much too busy for me, BUT - DAMN, Bill Cobham grooves like a mofo!

The band I was with went and saw The Mahavishnu Orchestra in Phoenix. It was so intense that there were people falling asleep during the concert and I don't think it was from being loaded. Live it was SO intense.

Love mahavishnu, but the extended noodling sometimes detracts from the brilliant heads/composed sections.

In an interview where they pointed out how his playing was markedly restrained, the bass player (Rick Laird) said, "well, someone's got to play the one." lol
If you like that stuff, you might like this simpler but quite powerful take on it with early Journey, 'kohutek'- Aynsley Dunbar on drums. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKpP55H4mKY
