Gas stations -when did this happen?

Went to get some fuel for the auto the other day and received the absolute worst service. I stopped the car in front of the pump and waited 5 minutes then 10. Finally I got out of the car and looked around glaring in amazement.

I hate to say it because I'm usually a very calm person but I got so fed up I just finally grabbed the nozzle and pumped the gas myself. The people in the car behind me were stunned too because they were yelling out of the car windows and cursing, eventually blasting their horn and finally they screeched their tires and sped away.

I tell you I'll never go back to that place. Horrible, worst ever.

No one does their job anymore. Pitiful.

I drove through New Jersey for the first time ever a few weeks ago. I was perplexed by the no-self-service gas station. I felt strange getting out, swiping my card at the pump and watching some other guy squeeze the handle and fill up my tank. It was the first time in my adult life I could remember someone else pumping my gas and I didn't like it. it is so easy to do that it is not really the kind of the thing I need someone else's help with.

Why did full serve go away? Or do some places still have it perhaps?

Cost, it is cheaper to not have someone there to pump the gas, although I do see some full service stations around here, I had a "friend" in high school who could not pump gas and had to use the only local full service station to get gas, this was 10 years ago though.

It is my understanding some states still have laws that require full service and no self serve, I think Oregon is one.

I'm headed up that way in a few months. I'll make note of it. It was weird, being in NJ, having someone pump your gas (it was weird in general there).

I remember a couple years ago that drivers were, according to law, not allowed to pump their own gas in Oregon.
Its the only reason my crazy ass cousin in OR could keep employed..

Yup. I'd been on a camping trip and "plum fergot" about the law and started pumping my own gas in Oregon (we'd been by the White Salmon River, Washington that morning and crossed the Columbia) and the attendants "rescued" me from my undertaking. :^)

Sorry!

That wouldn't be happening in NJ - NJ people don't pump their own gas.

In New Jersey it is all Full Serve. Other areas would usually have a full serve and self serve island. Full would cost 10 or so cents more a gallon, and eventually it was not used often enough to make it worth offering. I worked as a full service attendant as a teen. Any other job seemed to be a step up on the world.

Wow . I just learned something. I just assumed this whole country was self service gas stations. I wonder how the prices compare ?
