Speaker Efficiency Ratings
I am interested in the following speakers:
Cele Blue and/or Gold Cele G12H 65 Heritage Emi Cannabis Rex Tone Tubby Alnico Jensen Neo Of these, which is the highest in efficiency rating (dB)? I am looking to wrest the most volume possible out of my amp, so the higher the efficiency, the louder it will be, correct? Other speakers that may work that I may have overlooked? I prefer them to be a bit on the darker side, low-mids are good, headroom is important, but not imperative, 8 ohms would be the necessary impedence. Thanks!

I don't know the efficiencies of these speakers but I think the Celestion Blue must be fairly high in efficiency compared the the others. It isn't the least bit dark though.
Yes, speakers that have higher efficiency are louder. Efficiency isn't always great. Sometimes it is better to crank the amp a little higher and get the advantage of more distortion, not that is always better. You can add an Eminence Red White and Blues & Weber 1265 to your list. |

Thanks bosstone,
The reason I am looking is that I have a Clark Princeton clone that I have thought of selling (it's in the emporium as a matter of fact) but I absolutely LOVE the tone. Problem is I switched bands from one that mic'd amps to one that doesn't and the volume is 'just enough' for most gigs, but on some it seems to get lost on songs when the drummer really goes for it. If it only had an extra dB or two of volume, I would keep it forever. It's a PR circuit with the Paul C and Stokes mods built in and larger transformers which blueprints to 20 watts. It was built with a 12" speaker so I have lots of options. Currently it has the Weber Ferromax Ceramic C12N clone in it now. My next attempt to salvage this tone machine from the auction block will be to try a few different tube set ups for more volume and add a new speaker to eake out a couple of dB of volume. I was thinking a speaker with smooth mids boosted would help since hearing more mids makes an amp 'sound louder', so I am looking in that direction. The tone right now is very similar to the best vintage Super Reverb you've ever heard, but at about half volume and through a single 12" instead of four 10s. It's bright enough on it's own that I don't really want an overly bright speaker. It's voiced so that a dark speaker could be compensated for with the tone stack, but I don't think a really bright one could be tamed as much as I prefer. Another avenue is to pickup a good twoX12" cab and run it with the amp on top (the amp has an ext jack so I can run either cab only, or in tandem with the onboard speaker). That should help the volume a bit, huh?

I am not up on the efficiencies of a lot of speakers and definitely not of the ones you mentioned. I would send Weber of Scumback an email and ask for their recommendations. Good luck.

In terms of in room using my own ears efficiency here is where I think these speakers line up from loudest to most quiet.
Cele Blue and/or Gold Tone Tubby Alnico Cele G12H 65 Heritage Emi Cannabis Rex *Jensen Neo* (not sure cuz I have never heard it). I know that in my Deluxe reverb the tone tubby alnico was un belivabley good. I was able to use all the range of the tone controls as the bass was handled very well and the treble tone was not edgy at all. |

well you should be able to find the efficientcy ratings of the Celestion and Emi's on their websites. Just to clarfiy...are you asking about the Cele. G12H 60 watter speaker or the G1265 ala the popular choice for D-style amps.
