1993 ES335 question

I found a 1993 ES335 in a shop that I had a question on that the dealer was not sure of the answer; were these finished in nitro? Which, if any, Gibsons would not be? The guitar is in great shape, tobacco sunburst, and except for some "relicing" on the nickel covers and hardware it has no issues I can see; no buzzes, no signs of repairs. Are 335's from this era good buys generally? What would you look for in a used 335?

I am not much of a Gibson player but after playing it for over an hour I am gassing a bit . Price seems right too - $1500. I know the guy pretty well so I know he would disclose any issues, and actually is selling it a second time. The previous owner bought it from him.

I was thinking a ES339 would be the ticket, but after finding this I am second guessing.

I think they're all nitro. As far as I know, Gibson never went to urethane, though I've read the modern nitro isn't the same as what was used in the 50s. I think the current version has "plasticizers" in it.

Hey Jeff, long time no see

Sounds like a sweet geetar. You could always flip it later if you didn't like it, right?

Does it have the Varitone knob, or just 4 volumes?

Here's something to fuel the GAS:

that's a good price...if you don't like it you could easily get that back in the Emporium, even given the current gear slump.

Hey Scott -
No varitone knob, just 2 vol 2 tone. I think the varitone came on another model - no up with my Gibson data (Fender guy ).

Flip it? Not much of a guitar flipper these days. Amps, pedals, different story. I have been reading up on the new ES339's, seem like a great guitar, but for $1500 this 335 may be too good to pass up.

I just spent 2 months shopping for 335s. '93 was a good year and that's a great price if the condition is as you described. Go for it!!!
