Why is all that cotton inside the cab?
You know, the white fiber padding you find in quilts. I bought a framus dragon 4x12 and it has the padding inside. What does it do? The cab sounds great with my Splawn. I just wonder if I should put in my other cabs....

It is cotton or poly batting to absorb resonant frequencies, internal reflections, and standing waves.
I have it in my Bogner OS 2x12.

I thought that padding was NOT ideal in a guitar cab per the Celestion folks.

Padding usually has the effect of dampening highs and emphasizing the bottoms. I believe Polytone combo amps used to be heavily padded internally with some type of material.

My Ampeg V4 4x12 cab has the padding.

I have two Avatar V30-loaded 2x12 cabs: one closed-back with padding, one semi-closed back without padding. I prefer the semi-closed back with no padding. The closed-back padded 2x12 seems to have a sucked-out low end and a midrangey tone. The non-padded cab sounds more open and woody which I prefer.
Having said that, The Bogner oversized 2x12 is one of the best cabs I've ever played and it's closed-back and padded... go figure. It's a lot of cab for small gigs, though. |
