I might be a Bass Player....
Our Bass Player wasn't able to show up for practice Saturday, just for the hell of it I picked up the Bass and started playing. I LOVED IT!!! I've been playing guitar for over thirty years only to discover I think I'm a bass player. I've heard of married men realizing they're gay after years of marriage...... at least it wasn't that (not that there's anything wrong with that, lol!)
Btw, this is the first time I've even been to this part of the forum!

Tifosi is an Italian term generally referring to fans of auto racing. I think TwoTubMan is a tifoso. (singular) Am I close?

I finally won something! What is the prize? Oh.... never mind.
Also Luke, I also welcome you to the dark side. I play guitar and bass about 50/50 so I love the bright side too. It does take a bit of adjustment with the switching back and forth. Skinny strings vs chubby ones you know. |

I had a MIM P-bass for a couple of years. Gave me something to do when we had 3 acoustic guitars, me on electric (I don't do acoustic guitar) at our living room jams. Sold the bass a few years back. Lately, I've been window shopping in that part of the music stores I've gone into.
Couple of week ago, I played a fretless Squire J-bass at my local GC. Surprisingly damn good sounding instrument. Trying to avoid violating my Prime Directive - No New Gear, Only Used Stuff.

Thanks for the Tifosi clarification! I really had a Blast playing Bass, it's made me rethink a lot of things....

I like playing bass better than guitar, as long as I have a good drummer. I have been playing guitar for about 17 years and playing bass for about 12. I picked up the bass much better than the guitar. Just felt more natural. The groove thing is cool.

I love playing bass also, and have recently gotten back to it. Picked up a used MIM J for under $250 with upgraded pups and a BA bridge. plays fine. Also picked up a Hartke 12" Kickback used. Talkbass.com is a great place for info and used gear.

It's just a better instrument for some people. I'll play a six string at home, but nothing is more fun in a band setting for me than playing bass. It's just what I like.

Funny, I just went through this same experience last night. Our bass player rarely ever shows up to jam with us anymore and I had been toying with the idea of trying to fill in. Got my hands on a used Ibanez Roadstar II bass last week for dirt and I brought it last night just in case. Of course, he didn't show and I opted to play the bass vice my precious EBMM JP6. I really enjoyed it. I've been playing (well, attempting to play
) guitar for almost 12 years and I play mostly rhythm and some leads in our band but last night, the bass just felt right. Still trying to get used to the feel of the neck and there's alot of scales I don't know and i'm really trying to stay away from my natural instinct of wanting to use a pick but I was having a blast adding a different twist to some of our originals that I've been playing guitar on. Could the bass GAS floodgates be ready to burst open????!!!!

No, you are obviously NOT a bass player!! You mentioned experiencing "enjoyment", "fun", you "LOVED IT!!!"?? Well then, Sir, you are just another gtr player "slumming". Bass playing is drugery, it is about unhappiness, pain and suffering; about incessantly repetative, monotoneous, root-oriented hell, and utter, homocidal hatred for the gtrist as he winds up for his seventh chorus on Stormy Monday! That, Sir, is bass playing!!!
I wonder will they detect the ironic humor of my statement if I continue to refuse to employ those nauseating, cutsie-poo smiley things?

Whether or not to pick (the electric bass that is), might have something to with where the player came from before playing electric bass. For example, ex guitar players tend to pick (Carol Kaye, Berry Oakley). |
