How do you get the big powerful 'thump' palm mutes??

Nope. Im wondering about the big CHUNKY CHUGG you get when palm muting at certain situations, Im not getting it right now...

It must be a big amp thing. I palm mute all the time with my Fender amp and G&L ASAT.

But I never walk away thinking "that is some big MF chunk".

The blues "chunk" is apparently less dramatic, more balanced???



This palm mute chunk you guys are talking about, is it like the metal "galloping" technique?
That is a rhythmic palm muted pattern of "D DUD D DUD D DUD D D D" .
D = down, U = up

A gallop, or reverse gallop is just one pattern. You can also get a big chunk wiht straight down-picking, but speed is not really the issue here.
Sometimes the best chunk comes when you leave space for it to breathe.
A good song to demonstrate this stuff is Harvester of Sorrow from AJFA, as it alternates between fast and slow uses as well as the clean and haevy arpeggiated sections.

Man...The BEST guitar I had for that was a hard-tailed Parker Fly. That guitar had so much ASS on it it was unbelievable. It didn't take a really aggressive right hand either, you just had to have a good choke on the strings and like other people have said keep the OD low.

i get my perfect chunk (great attack) using a Dimarzio Megadrive pickup on a hard-tail LP clone. Seems to have a scoop built in and a small boost on the booty.

It's really all about the preamp and EQ used for that style of music, as many have said, the mids are scooped and the gain brought up which results in a "loudness" effect with cranked lows and highs. Amps designed for metal have preamp settings to accomplish this. If you watch the players who do this style, the technique is counterintuitive; you have to use far, far more finesse with so much overdrive. You watch Dimebag Darrel, for example, or EVH, the right hand hardly moves. The amp is doing all the work! Certain pickups help but it's a humbucker combined with the preamp, amp, and speaker cabinet. The 4x12 Marshall 1960 style is excellent for this but a 2x12 (both closed-back) are about the best for this kind of playing.

Also, you don't want to mute TOO hard.
