Different String Gauges for Different Guitars?
Do most people play one string gauge over all their axes, or do you guys mix it up? I love my Strat with 11s but am kind of getting into my Ric 330 with 10s. This is odd because I always thought it was supposed to be the other way around: short scale gets thicker strings, longer scale gets thinner strings.
I'm curious to hear how you string them and what the reasoning is, from players with more experience than me and my 2 guitars

I use 9s on my 25.5" scale & 10s on my 24.75" scale guitars. I also have a 24" scale Jagmaster that I use 11s on.

Ditto. I used to have 10s on everything, but this way works out much better.

I'm a bit wierd about it, I like the same guage on everything, regardless of scale. I use 11's. Tried 12's on the Jaguar and liked that actually, but went back to 11's for more brightness.
kingblud, I can see why you'd like 10's on the Ric, when I had one it wouldn't jangle with heavier strings, I ended up putting 9's for it to sound 'right' but hated the feel so I sold it. |

I string my Guild X-500 with D'Addario 10-52s because the scale is short (24.75") so I find myself bending the upper strings a lot. The brand doesn't matter so much, but D'Addarios are easy to find anywhere.
I string my National Town and Country with DR Pure Blues 11s. The narrow, 25" neck is more conducive to fingerpicking and slide, so I use slightly heavier strings.

i only use D'Addario brand but i use several gauges of them depending on the scale length, tuning and what i want the guitar to do.
9-46 on one 25.5" scale in E 10-46 on most 25.5" scale in E 11-49 on les pauls and other 24.75" scale in E 10.5 - 48 on a 25.5" scale in Eb 11 - 52 on 25.5" tuned down a full step to D so yeah, switching gauges per guitar is normal in my book. -Mike |

For me it depends on what the particular guitar likes. I don't have any hard and fast rules like 11's on Fender and 10's on Gibson, etc except when I first get a guitar to asses its feel. Some guitars just seem to respond better to a certain gauge regardless of their construction.

I use GHS EJ .11 on my strats and "tele-master" (before i used Galli .12 but can't find them anymore) / Dunlop .11 as an alternative when the Eric Johnson's GHS are not available.
For Acoustics i use the .10 Elixir
