1930 Martin Acoustic: $65,000
I was on Staten Island today and decided to stop in at Mandolin Brothers to see what guitars they had. I had read about and heard about Mandolin Brothers and that they had a lot of vintage guitars.
I got a grand tour of the small store that is packed to the gills with new and vintage guitars and mandolins. This was my first time at Mandolins and I left feeling really impressed- like walking out of a museum! The owner (Stan?) was such a gentleman and another woman gave a walk around tour and she had some history for nearly all of the guitars. Anyway, I came across this OLD 1930 Martin (I can't remember the model) and turned over the price tag to see $65,000.00. So, nervously I removed the guitar from the wall hanger and sat on a stool and began noodling around with this Martin while I was talking to the lady about guitars. The guitar was in great condition and sounded SO good for an 80 year old guitar. It was surprisingly easy to play and the action was stunningly low and smooth. Wow. $65K for that 4lb piece of sonic heaven. How many different people could have played this guitar over 80 years? Incredible. If you ever get the opportunity to swing by Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island NY.....do it. You'll spend about an hour there and make sure you get more than 40 minutes on the parking meter or you will also get a $35 ticket like myself today. A small price to pay to play a piece of history! See ya. |

Surprised they let you touch it. Not a slap against you, as I'm sure you're a great player -- just think how expensive one slip would be!

The owner and the lady (who has worked there for 20 years) were SO pleasant to talk to and she didn't even wince when I took it off the wall. Next to the 1930 Martin was a 1935(?) Martin for $35,000.00. Every guitar there could have been played on newer Fender amps (set-up in smaller rooms around the perimeter) as well as some vintage amps (old Super Reverb and Tweed Champ come to mind). The only guitar there that was in a glass enclosure was a 1957 (I think I have the year right) Fender Strat for I think $27,000.

There's basically almost always stuff like that there.

Mando Bros has always been great about letting anybody play anything in the store, regardless of value.

It's just a cool place to browse around. I haven't been to to many 'ma & pa shops' that sell such vintage guitars. In fact, 1930 is more ancient than vintage....

Gruhn's in Nashville is similar, although they "guard" the guitars a bit more (I don't blame them). They want to be the one to take the guitar down and hand it to you, but you can try out anything, and they have some amazing things in stock.

I was told that the best stuff at Gruhn's is on some upper floors, I don't know that just anybody can go up there. I know I never did.

The Strat I saw in the glass case was a 1957 and is being sold with the original tweed case for $73,000.00.

When I was looking (and bought) an amp from UltraSound in NYC, Gene very graciously let me use a '59 Burst (gorgeous plaintop) and a mint '61 Fiesta Red Strat fresh from under a bed in the UK. Oh, and I tested them through his Trainwreck before I tried out his amps for sale...

Thanks for posting that TwoTubMan...
Just by looking at it, you might think that being SO OLD it would be 'unplayable' no? Oh, she's very playable and sounds terrific to boot... |
