G&L Pickups vs. p90s
I've got a 93 G&L ASAT, and have often heard that the pickups (MFD) compare to P90's. I have yet to play on a P90 guitar, but I was wondering if anyone has had a lot of experience with both types of pickups and could give me some opinions. Thanks!

I've had several of both. They are fairly close in output but sound almost nothing alike. The MFDs sound almost mid-scooped and P-90s have a lot of mids.
They are both excellent pickups in their own ways, however, IMO.

The look is where similarities end, if you're referring to the big MFD's. MFD's, to my ears, are big and round sounding (ceramic magnets), whereas P90's have a more edgy bite.

The big MFD ones are the ones I'm talking about. I didn't think they sounded very much like P-90's, but I was wondering why people would make the comparison. I was mostly thinking output, so I guess that's the consensus?

Aesthetics, I think.

exactly, people look but don't look carefully, assume it's a P-90 (or looks like one) and it goes from there ...
they are great pickups IMO and have a slightly beefier tone than a Tele (still w/ Tele-ish character) but not the sound of a P-90. |
