Anyone tried a different tube in place of an EF86?
Has any body experimented with swapping a different preamp tube in place of the EF86 in your 18 watt type amps?
Thanks!! Rock on |

You can't put a 12AX7 in place of a EF86 I'm pretty sure the two tubes are wired differently and you could possibly cause some damage I wouldn't try it!!!!!

I have an amp that used to have a 6SL7, then a 6SJ7, and now has an EF86. The amp had a few circut changes in between tube swaps so, it's hard to tell the differences. The SJ7 was a bit stiffer sounding if I remember...

Was there pretty big circuit changes?
What did you favor the most? What type of amp is it? |

How about using a 6U8A and switching between triode and pentode operation? Could make for an interesting modification.

6u8a? Hmm. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Can recommend investigating Philips E80F aka 6084 as plug in sub, very high quality (also longer) tube.

5879 is also a good choice but will require rewiring the socket IIRC. I also like the E80F

All I would have to do is rewire the socket to use a 5879? No component changes?
