Apparently, I'm looking for a fuzz... but fuzzes often sound grainy and "fizzy" to me.
I want a totally smooooooth, non-grainy pedal, for lead work. I want to good touch response (more and more I'm tending to play with the gain cooking, and adjusting volume/intensity with my attack). Good note definition. Loads of sustain. I tried the BB Preamp a while ago... it seemed pretty good. Anything option might be boosting my Riot, and putting a compressor after. But new pedals are more fun.

Diamond Fireburst Silicon Fuzz. Lots of gain, has a switchable midboost. Not too bad with the volume down either. Very Smooth

I second that. FIreburst is about as liquid smooth as you can get for fuzz pedals

Check out an Earthquaker Devices Hoof, Stomp Under Foot (muffs) or Blackout Effectors Musket. All are versatile Muff variants. I got a Hoof (3 knob V1) last week and was shocked at how smooth and dynamic it is. Definitely not a one trick pony. None of the clips out there really do it justice imo.

If you don't want the fuzz sound but want smooth sustainy pretty gain, take a look at DMB Pedals' STELLAR DRIVE. It's a nice crunchy OD at lower settings and gets really smooth and compressed up high.

Have you tried running a fuzz into another pedal that'll tame the high end fizz? I've used EQ pedals, a low pass filter, and overdrives for that purpose.

Or even rolling the guitar tone knob down. Most fuzzes, especially when dimed, don't sound all that different with the guitar tone down, but it can help pull the fizz out.

I have one on the way so I don't know for sure but isn't this textbook RK's Fuzz Head maybe with a comp?
It's pretty much the description I have heard about it.

sounds like you want a pedal with symmetrical clipping....
For SMOOTH leads, I have had much luck with TS type clones (analogman TS9), the Zendrive and Hermida Audio NuValve. Lots of tweaking there. Also I tried a Jetter GS Blue and it was smoooth as well. It felt like a hybrid TS9 + fuzz. (sin the midhump). Also, smooth sometimes means turning your guitar tone knob back into the darker ranges. Give that a shot!

I think you can get great, smooth tones with a LM308 equipped RAT pedal. So, you may not have to go to fuzz to get what you're after. Works pretty well for Scofield and Gilmour.

If I remember correctly, Gilmour does run his RAT into an EQ to shape the sound. Also, I think Scofield uses his with the gain set very low - a cool sound, but not really 'liquid.'

If you need four additional pedals to make one sound good... something's wrong with the design of the fuzz.
