New York's Alright If You Like Saxophones

As a New Yorker, I continue to have a love/hate relationship with the city. So much to like, and so much to do, but subway platforms that smell like p*ss, idiots on the subway, and everywhere a hassle makes me sometimes give it a big MEH.

I'm curious what gets your goat in your place of residence?

People who attempt to spell the word "Saxaphones"[sic].

They're almost as bad as people who would trash NYC.

Point taken, and corrected. Glad you answered the question too. Thanks for sharing

Too many people for any peace of mind.

It's a pee-pee-soaked heckhole.

The people who move to the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area and constantly complain how much it sucks compared to where they moved from.

I dunno- I've lived in various places, and nowhere has felt like home the way New York does. There's plenty to complain about, I guess, but that's true of any place you care to name.

Even though I often bemoan the city's drivers, local government and more, no place I know of offers so much vitality. I swear that some day I'll leave, but on my occasional walks over the Brooklyn Bridge, I think that I'd have to be crazier to leave than to stay.

It's not for everyone, of course, but given the homogeneity of so much of the rest of the country, I'm happy to be here.

Nah...the Lex line doesn't really smell like pee. Overcrowded? Yes, but doen't smell too bad. Like any place, it has it's warts, but I'd never want to be anywhere else....

Wasn't it John Updike who described a true New Yorker as someone with the "secret belief that people living anywhere else had to be, in some sense, kidding"?

For me, it's all about how in no other place could I make so much doing so little. For making money, I know of no better place.

But I like being by myself, and I found myself holed up inside to avoid people. Now I ride my bike everywhere (another "pro" for NYC), so I can leave my house and still be almost alone.

But I'd rather see rolling pastures and hear birds singing than see thousand-foot concrete and filthy asphalt and hear blaring horns, foul-mouthed screaming teenagers, and bass-heavy reggaeton booming from every car. (Those of you not in NYC, thank your lucky stars you don't have to listen to that shitty blend of music...reggaeton is the worst!)
I have, however, seen more hawks and raccoons in NYC that I ever saw in East Tennessee, where I'm from.

Still, give me 20 acres and a little house in the middle of nowhere, and I'd be gone from here in a flash.
