starter pa - allen heath pa20/yamaha emx5016cf or powered speakers

Hi all got a few queries here about p.a. options. Trying to upgrade the archaic powered mixer plus cheap jbl speakers (tr series) we running at the moment. Have been weighing up powered speakers vs powered mixers. I can get a powered mixer (either yamaha or allen and heath) for about 2k ( i am in New Zealand - prices are ludicrous 2nd hand market is scarce, almost everything is bought unheard - tragic) plus some 2nd hand jbl mr series for $500. Pretty much under 3k for mixer which gives me 500watt a side, in the case of the A&H, plus some effects and eq. In comparison can get a 2 x rcf 312a and 1 x rcf800as sub for 4k(2nd hand - i tell the prices here will kill ya!) . But then I still need a mixer, fx and eq. SO...am keen to hear opinions/experience between the yamaha 5016cf and yamaha pa20/12 mixers. both seem pretty good with different pluses and minuses looking at the specs but love to hear real usage. ALSO... open the debate between powered speakers and powered mixer approach - mayb I should bite the bullet and spend the xtra for powered speakers etc. To give a context we are a 3/4 piece reggae/rock/blues outfit playing gigs sized between cafes to wedding - 30-200. Hiring stuff is pretty easy so can stay small and hire in for bigger gigs if needed. Thanks for all/any of your ideas and experiences!

Not sure what the prices on the QSC K Series powered boxes are out your way, but they're incredible. Heads and shoulders above the rest in the small to medium club powered speaker game.

Damn!
How are they in comparison pricewise to other powered boxes though?

Ouch. I agree the QSC's are killer. The RCF's are no slouches either though. I'm all for the powered speaker route for band PA's. Portability is the main thing (no amp rack to lug around), but also it takes the guessing game out of powering your speakers properly. They tend to be hard to blow up. That's my case for powered speakers. Sorry, I don't know much about the mixers. I'm a fan of digital these days. Again, portability (don't need external fx or eq), and ease of set up.

yep prices suck here compared to what you guys get. i should start importing from the states and helping folks out while still making a little myself! other speakers similarly expensive - $1670 for one rcf312a new, Jbl prx's are $3200 each! i seen em new on ebay in U.S. for $899! Thats why I'm looking at powered mixers - they don't seem a world away from overseas prices - $2k for the allen and heath and just a little more for the yamaha. Would love to hear from anyone whose used either of these.

Hey Jalford by gone digital do you mean using a laptop? I been trying to run my apple mac via apogee duet into mixer to use vocal effects through mainstage but keep getting a distorted signal - any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

No, I meant using a digital hardware mixer such as a Yamaha 01V or a Presonus StudioLive. These may also be prohibitively expensive where you are too though. Running studio software in a live environment is always a little dodgey at best. It's really just not the right tool for the job. Even a cheap outboard reverb will probably do a better job.

The Presonus is a great piece of gear , you get a huge amount of processing in a small, gigable package for 2k$.
