Defuzzing a Carvin ValveMaster 100..how?
I'm struggling to lower the gain, retain an open sound, keep away from a blatty distortion on transients, etc., all the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. This is for the OD channel, only.
The schematic is here: http://www.carvinmuseum.com/techdocs.html see: valvemaster I can't get a nice symmetrical od to happen. Some of the circuit topology doesn't allow easy substitutions so any info to this end is appreciated. A Tubescreamer equivalent, followed by the eq section, tonally, would be fine.

I've done quite a bit of work with these amps. The biggest problem you have there is the clipping diodes D1 - D4, but you have to give the amp a referewnce to ground in place of these diodes, I use a 220k resistor. You can go with a larger value if you want to retain more gain, but IMO the amp has more than enough gain and 220k works well.
Second, those 220k plate loads, ditch those for 100k. I do a few other things to shape the tone, but just to smooth out the distortion those two things will help a lot.

I think I can reconfigure the od cct to match the whole SLO od section.
I have worked with that before in a Yam T100c, don't love it either, but it should fit.
