New reverb tanks vs old

Is it my imagination, or do the old Gibbs/Accutronics tanks from the 60s/70s sound better than the current versions? Is that possible with such a simple design as a reverb tank? Has anyone found the opposite? Or no difference at all?

I've found that there are great variations tank to tank. New and old, but even more so with newer ones. Some just sound better than others. On new ones, quality control seems inconsistent at best (in my limited experience). As in pretty much a coin toss as to whether a specific tank will sound really nice or be unbearably tinny and harsh.
