Jimmy Page fans...
Anybody ever saw him playing a Purple Les Paul back in the day?...Went and picked up my Les Paul from my good friend Tom Keckler and he told me some great stories about Gibson and "THE LES PAUL GUITAR"....He told me that if you can find a 68 or 69 Gibson Les Paul they are GREAT, GREAT guitars...Told me that he and Mike Ladd had Gibson build a few back in those days, and HE PAINTED ONE PURPLE..and it ended up with Jimmy Page...Said Page LOVED the Guitar...T.K my friends if you are ever in Memphis...Go by St. Blues Guitars..He is there from 1:00 to 3:30 everyday..Stringing guitars and working on other people's stuff...( He set up a Pre-Historic 1988 I bought...Re-surfaced the fret board by hand, re-fretted it with BIG FRETS..put in an RS upgrade kit..Put in a set of WCR American Steele pickups and strung it with 11's..The thing PLAY"S ITSELF!) The guy has been around and is friends with Billy Gibbons, Clapton, Jeff Beck...If you ever are in Memphis..Go to Sun Records..then go down the street on Marshall and drop in and see old "T.K"..
And if you've ever seen pictures of Jimmy Page with a Purple Les Paul...Tom's the man who painted it way back when... |

Never seen him play a purple les paul but a wine red one; wide headstock, T-tops (apparently) and years later fitted with a b-bender.

I'll call Tom and ask him about it...

The Purple might have turned to wine red over the years... |

Yeah....the purple/wine Les Paul got culled.
A long time ago. The Parsons/White b-bender ruined that guitar, too much wood routed from the back. Doesn't work with a Les Paul. ain't no such thing as a 1969 Les Paul is there? |

The Les Paul was reintroduced to the range in 1968, but in P-90 goldtop and LP Custom.

Is it this one? I was there, about 10 rows of smelly drunk bikers from the front! I was just 16 and it was my first concert. Pink Floyd were amazing too, I remember it being so loud my ribs were reverbarating! |

Pretty sure I have seen Page use the purple LP in question. It was in 1995 and 1996 during the Page/Plant tour and I think the guitar may have had the TransPerformance system added to it. From what I remember. If anyone can find pics of the purple one, please post them!! |

It's more purple than the one he used on Whole Lotta Love from TSRTS.

Weird. I've seen shots of the gold TransPerformance LP, and the wine red LP with the B Bender....but the purple LP is a new one on me!

There is also another red LP Page used several times in 1977 and it is NOT the Wine red one with the B Bender that we usually see. Experts say the guitar is most likely a painted '52 gold top. Page bought it from a guitar player from a group called "the Babys" in 1973 or 74 I think.

Talked with Tom and he said...Mike Ladd from Memphis went to Gibson and had them build about 10 Les Pauls for his store in 1968...a few had PLAIN tops and they painted them...One of them HE PAINTED PURPLE and sold to Jimmy Page..This was around that time era...Page had the guitar and the only mod that he knew that was ever done to it was a COIL TAP and he thinks Page's tech did that....The man's been around and knows his stuff...Maybe you Page fans can find a picture of him with the guitar...
