Everyone wants something for free. Do you think that hosting this stuff doesn't cost someone money?

I only use them for lyrics I am really unsure of, and even then.
You quickly find lots of definite mistakes in the lyrics (either misheard, or taken directly from liner notes...but often the end lyrics change in the recording) and very quickly find out that for most or many songs, they ALL have the SAME version (the wrong one)... For one thing, if I am learning lyrics, the absolute BEST start to memorizing, is the time spent looping, stopping, rewinding, leaning in to hear better, etc. trying to get all the lyrics, and then writing them down (or in a Word file). That to me is the real start of me learning the lyrics, because when you do have to really listen, you also often have to think in context... how likely is it the person just sang "the wily mermaid" or "the way we were made" in a song that otherwise is about people, and never mentions the sea or water? See...you start having to think about what the song is about. I don't say I never use it, it is a quick and easy thing, but more and more nowdays they have so many ads, etc. But while we are talking about "Do you think that hosting this stuff doesn't cost someone money?" let's keep in mind, their "worth" is from FREE LABOR, the labor of the rest of us, who go to the trouble of writing the lyrics down, believing we are sharing and helping our fellow musicians...the actual cost of hosting, I doubt is very high. Most likely (since you find the same files everwhere) they first download another sites lyrics, then let folks correct or enter new lyrics, and then sell advertising.

Lyric, chord progression, and tab sites are the only ones I know for sure have supplied worms, trojans and other problems. I guess they're obvious targets...shame really.

What I'm getting to...I remember in the late 80's even, early 90's when lyric sites would pop up, within a short time the music companies lawyers would slap them with an injunction, and close them down, another would pop up. This went on for years. Seems like the lyrics were more correct back then too. What I just began wondering is....I wonder if any of those music companies decided "if we can't STOP them, lets at least infest them!". Seriously, it wouldn't be nuts to think that they have some link to those sites, and figure at least they'll make some money off of ads, have lyrics that are wrong, and use spyware (hell...maybe some of that spyware looks for illegally downloaded mp3 files for later lawsuits!) and malicious virus to scare most of us from the lyrics sites? If they "pollute the waters" they end up discouraging folk from using any of the lyrics sites. Seems like a win-win from their point of view. It's just conjecture on my part (I'm not even saying they are doing this, just that it certainly is in the realm of possibility, considering the losses they calculate for such things, the money at stake...history)

I only wish I had those lyric, chord and tab sheets, even with all the ads, when I was 16.
I find it hard to complain about the ringtone ads when I'm getting so much for so little.

I understand your frustration, but you get what you pay for. Why not seek out the published books with the material you want so the artist and publisher get their due and you are spared the ads? Or write to the artist directly or their management to see if you can buy a set? I wrote to Blue Oyster Cult back in the 70s and they sent me a huge green computer print out with all their lyrics and a nice letter thanking me for supporting the band. How cool is that? Cemented my love for the band and I've been promoting them informally ever since.

Well I am old enough to remember sitting with a record and going over and over it to learn. I agree it helped me memorize the tune better than having it served up on a platter so to speak. But here's a suggestion. I used to have a few favorite websites but found all the problems mentioned and I always keep my Norton up to date. but gave up going to them first and discovered that if you just type the song name and then the word "lyric" into Google it will pop up 10 or 20 sites that have the lyric. Now I already know that the "Lyric" sites have the most spy-ware and so I usually click on 2 or 3 of the ones that don't have Lyric in the name and the Minuit they start with the popups just click out ASAP and go to another one. Usually you will find a site that isn't an attempt to suck you in to buy something. You will find sites run by true music lovers that aren't full of ads. Often times it will be the band site or a fan site.
So try it next time! Google ...song title and the word "lyric" Try it you may like it. peace Kirk |
