Use a Quad Preamp with bass?

Has anyone tried using a Quad preamp with a bass guitar, or other tube based preamp for guitar? How did it turn out?

supposedly that much-coveted alembic tube bass preamp was just the front end of a fender showman in a rack case.

i don't know why mesa doesn't release a real bass preamp, but a clean channel on that quad might sound pretty good.
