66 Jensen C12N Question

I just picked up a (not a reissue) 65 Twin Reverb and it has a pair of 66 Jensen C12N speakers. I want to know what the sensitivity rating is and the watt handling capacity. I believe they are rated for 50 watts but I am not certain.

If I were to use and extension cab in addition to the combo speakers (4 ohms) what would be the correct/safest load to use for this?

Thank You

The original C12N's were 25 watt speakers (continuous); 50 watts peak. Remember the originals used paper coil formers which couldn't take the heat like today's kapton formers.

It would be safe to use another 4 ohm bottom @ 2 ohms. With an 8 ohm extension you would have 2.67 ohms and with a 16 ohm, 3.2 ohms.

Thank you Slider, the speakers have been re-coned, do they usually change the formers/voice coils when they re-cone a speaker?

Do you know what the db/sensitivity rating would be for these speakers? Are they high efficiency speakers?

Thank You

New, updated parts are usually used when speakers are re-coned. Most use kapton formers but you would have to contact the re-coner to find out which voice coil was used to be sure of the power handling. I have Weber re-cone my C12N's with 50 watt voice coils and their 12F150 cone. I believe these are 98db sensitivity. Original C12N's are either 94 or 96 db.

Thanks again. I will have to ask the seller where he had the speakers re-coned. The seller is the owner of True Tone speaker cabinets. I guess that explains why my Twin's output doesn't seem to be quite what I thought it would be. I had played through a BF Twin with JBL's and it was very loud when the volume was on "3". With the Jensens having a db rating of 94 to 96 it really tames the volume. My Twin seems to be putting out about the same volume as my 66 Pro Reverb with Tone Tubbys at lower volume settings. I haven't had the chance to really krank the Twin up yet but it has great tone, very good cleans with a big bottom.

Make sure they were reconed at 8 ohms each, for a total of 4 ohms. Check that the tubes are biased correctly (a "hot" bias will remove clean overhead). If they were reconed with the traditional paper cone kit, they are just barely 25w speakers and that Twin will eventually destroy them. Then you'll get them reconed again, so no big deal.

JBLs or EV SROs or Altec 514s are all good choices for speakers in that amp, they'll increase the clean overhead significantly. The only problem with JBLs in particular is that they do increase high end and some overdrives don't like that (for instance, a Cornish SS3 is NOT happy with JBLs). Still, on clean settings the sound of a BF Fender thru JBLs is something REALLY sweet!

I've been wanting to try the new EVM12L speakers, I imagine that they would be a good match up with the Twin. I've read that they produce very clean uncolored tone. I know the "Dumblish" crowd is always praisisng them.
