Talking Scored a '61 Brownface Pro for $300

So I went for a kayaking trip back where I grew up. As I'm driving down the main drag I spot a guitar shop! Of course I pulled over. Walk through the door, turn to the right and I see this:

I actually stood there for a few moments trying to figure out if this was actually possible... I walk over and look at the tag and see the price. At that point I just assumed it was a copy or gutted, I turn it around and see:

So... I kinda stumble up to the counter and casually ask the guy what the deal is with the pro... Dude just kinda grins at me "Pretty sweet amp, eh?" I really had no patience for jokes at this point, it was ****ing business time. I ask him if it's original, he claims it is, that the owner was local, hated to dump it but was desperate for cash.

The catch:

I had no money and no way to get any money.

So I did what any sane man would do I called the first person I could think of who: Would want the amp, actually had the money and would be willing to drive a couple hundred miles the next morning to get it without a second thought haha. He did just that, pulled the chassis out and it's all original aside from new Atom filters and a bias job. The previous owner even knew what he doing for when he finished the job he wrote all the current and dissipation specs inside the chassis with a sharpie.

Pretty sweet deal. For my buddy, that is.

it sounds like the guy who opened the guitar shop should find a new line of work.

Great score.

Just curious about the speaker. Is it a 15" and if so why is it not off center?

It looks like a replacement baffle with a 12".

Yes, the speaker was the the only thing not original. "Scorpion" something with a huge magnet. Must have a been his preference.. Don't know why you would swap a 15'' baffel for a 12'' much less put such an unusual speaker in it. Sounds GREAT though.. I had no complaints. By far, the best sounding Fender I have ever played, the trem by an even further margin... You hit it hard and it sounds chorusy.. Just SICK!

That's some deal!

I bought a '58 tweed Pro, about 20 years ago, that was stripped of its tweed and had a 12" baffle over the 15". Paid $450. It had a Celestion vented magnet 80 and sounded killer. I had it recovered, found a 15" Jensen P15N, played it for a couple of years and sold it. It sounded better with the 12" Celestion.
