Question Vox AC4TVH and matching cab

Greetings all,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a overdrive pedal that will work well with the Voxac4tvh and 12"cabinet? I use a Fender roadworn with single coils all stock. Many pedals seem to sound to tinny, or middy. I am looking for one that has a good deep response and highs with some mids not mid heavy. I guess a more rounded pedal would be a better description? I have tried Boss DS-1 (too fuzzy) Boss SD-1 (too much mid and no bass). Tube Screamer just doesn't have enough drive tone is good though.

Thanks for sharing if you can.

JM

I use a Barber Silver LTD and Barber Direct Drive into my AC4tv cab. Both sound great. However both of my Barbers have the added mod board for tailoring the sound even more, but both sounded great when in stock form too.

the crowther hotcake is a pretty common pedal to work well with vox and vox flavored amps.

I love the sound of my main board through my AC4 head/cab. I demo pretty much everything through it even though I gig an AC15. Tim/Timmy sounds really good through it (I know it's the stock TGP answer but they do work exceptionally well with VOX.) I also have liked my Sweet Honey or Sparkle Drive with the AC4. Sparkle Drive gives you a lot of flexibility; SHOD kinda has it's own thing going and kind of "rounds out" the VOX, but still can retain that sparkly top end.

Wow, didn't even stop to think about that aspect. I', kinda on the fence about the tone of the pickups - not great and yet not too bad. Thanks for the insight!

One if the Bluesbreaker clones might be a good choice (the Modtone/Rogue Blues Distortion is pretty cheap). They do suck some bass, not as much as a TS, though. There's also a cap mod for the AC4 that improves EQ performance (might consider upgrading the attenuator resistors at the same time, they're not high enough power).

I tried a bunch of pedals into an AC4TV once and the Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde sounded awesome. Some other pedals (OCD, GT500, Englishman) got sludgy and farty too quickly.

Damage Control Liquid Blues. Discontinued, but they show up from time to time. Mines a keeper; I've used it to sweeten solid state amps and modelers. Works great with tube amps, including my AC4TV. Big pedal though, two tubes at full plate voltage; also has a compressor. More info: http://damagecontrolusa.com/products/liquid-blues/

To me, only low gain pedals work well with a Vox AC4tv. A Timmy would work well, or a Tim if you turn down the gain on the boost side.

I have seriously considered a booster type of pedal. I'd like to try one...

Thanks!

In my experience it depends a lot on how loud you want to play your amp. The AC4TV has a nice overdrive by itself, if you can use its full volume range.

In this case a booster type pedal can give you the sound you are looking for.
