Physics Be Damned: Is there a mini-Super Reverb?
Over time, I've come to love everything about my SFSR (esp. after I put Webers in it) == tone, presence, clarity, etc. == except the WEIGHT! So, in a grand tilting at windmills question, I ask: is there any amp (combo or head/cab) that might give a similar voice but is more portable? Old, new, cheap, whatever -- just curious if anyone has a thought.

try neo speakers. The Jensen neo 10's are really good speakers..that'll lighten-up things quite a bit....Also, weber sells neo speakers versions of some of their speakers. I think right now they have some prototypes fpor sale (last time I looked).

"similar voice but is more portable?"
The key word is "similar". You just can't get the 4x10 sound from 2x10 or 1x12 speakers. There is just something magical about 4 10" speakers pushing air. Vintage Fenders, and clones all have a "similar" sound. Only you can decide which amp is similar enough for YOU! In my opinion, the 10" speakers are the key to the SR, so the Vibrolux Reverb (or clone) with 2x10 speakers is the closest smaller amp to a SR. |

Allen makes the Old Flame which is based on a Super Reverb but without the normal channel or vibrato function. It has a raw control and a better reverb.

I have been enjoying my 2 X 6" Allen Chihuahua Amp.
![]() I've tried some different speakers in it and am convinced that a 4 X 6" using a mix of late and medium break-up Weber Signature series Alnico's or their ceramic Sig's would be a surprise for many folks. When I powered my cabinet with a fixed bias 2X6l6 amp the effect exceeded my expectations. Might work with a SR driving 4 X 6"? Check out the frequency response profile of 6" speakers and think about where you set the bass EQ on most larger Fender amps. It is an inexpensive experiment considering my speakers have run between $20 and $45 per speaker. I am currently running Jensen Mod 6 speakers to reduce the volume for practice at home. The amp is astonishingly light in weight. Easy on the back. And you still get the "multiple speaker effect". |

The Band Master Reverb is the same circuit but uses a 4 Ohm OT, instead of a 2 Ohm, like the Super.
This is what I use: 1965 Super Reverb, w/ a bastardized Head box. ![]() I had the 2 Ohm OT replaced with a Mercury Magnetics OT with a 16, 8 and 4 Ohm Tap

To my ears, it's not even close, though I chose to use my VR over my SR because the SR is not portable enough.

Dr. Z's Galaxie is voiced to sound like a tweed Super, and it does. As mentioned, nothing really sounds just like a 4x10 setup, but my Gal has a very similar feel to a Super. I've had mine in a 1x12 combo for a while; doesn't sound as good as it did when I played it through a Z Best 2x12, but MUCH more convenient.

Yes, head and cab is the way to go for you, I would say. This way you won't have to haul both speakers AND amp at the same time - and you get the option of choosing different cabs depending on taste and venue.

This will sound strange, but try the Fender Pro Junior if you haven't. It is a simple little 1 x10 amp, that can capture similar tones to the Super Reverb if it is set right. I agree with others, you can't get it all without the 4x10 and big iron, but this little guy will get you in the ball park.

Just throwing my 2 cents in here.
I was amazed at how much my tweedy-sized 1-12" combo RedPlate BlackLoop reminded me of my '67 Super Reverb. It doesn;t have the reverb or the trem but, damn, if it doesn't sound great. 45 watts, (I ordered it w/) tube-biasing, 12" jensen Neo, around 40 lbs in its Studio Slips clamshell w/ cables and footswitches. In addition, it has a great overdrive channel that the clean channel cascades into. I use it at all the jam nights and other gigs where stage space is a consideration. I use my RP BlackVerb for regular gigs and occassionally my Bogner Duende. Think Tommy Castro's sound and you've got my little BlackLoop (although maybe not my playing exactly ).
