I purchased a 76 Goldtop Deluxe with minis for $2100 a few months ago.

If I remember right, these were deluxes in that era. Perhaps routed for full size buckers??

Yup it is a Deluxe, non original pickups and tuners otherwise in beautiful shape

So full sized humbuckers in place of the minis? Huh, hard to put a number on it but $1500-1700 would be my guess. My old '76 Deluxe was a 10 pound tank, nice sound but the weight did me in. But how I love a gold top regardless...

yeah I have a rare aged White/Gold 81 Standard that's got to be 10-11lbs, I'm fairly big and it get's to be a bit much after a half hour or so...

I paid a bit more for mine because it has incredible aging on it and I'm a sucker for the greening and cracking on old goldtops.

If you really want the guitar, I'd say $1800 is a good price... probably average for that vintage w/ the devaluing mods. Untouched museum quality Standards will fetch much higher prices. But who's gonna play a museum piece?

Do you have a chance to play it? That could be your deciding factor whether it's a good buy or not. I'd be very interested in that guitar for that price, but I'd want to play it first, check out the routes for pro or sloppy craftsmanship, etc.

Probably. And nothing wrong with that IMHO.

FYI the neck shape for 70s Les Pauls varies a lot: from thin like an R0 to fatter like an R7 or R8.

I agree. Actually, since more people want regular humbuckers than minis, a routed Deluxe should be worth more, assuming the job was well done.

Real collectors don't collect Norlins (except for "Mike Slub"). A mint condition example of any guitar is worth more than one that's worn, but quibbling over the "originality" of something with extremely high shipping totals is just a lame way of haggling for a lower than market price, IMHO.

Of course, if you do collect Norlins, please post pics and prove me wrong. I love Norlins, and would love to see them! At the risk of offending those that believe everything they read, I believe the '70 - '75 period was one of Gibson's best.

Yeah $1800 if it's a nice one, well routed, good pickups in it, etc; I'd agree that's fair. And I prefer full sized to mini's any day so that would be a plus for me. Offer $1700 but be willing to pay $1800 if you love the thing and it's all that...

One of the guitars that got away from me was an early 70's GT Deluxe, one with the little rings around the minis; phew! The guitar weighed just under 8 pounds, it had aged and relic'ed great, it rang for days and I was foolish enough to let it go. DOH! The mini's in that one sounded better than the minis in my 76 that I kept so I don't even know what I was thinking selling it, let alone for what I sold it for but y'all know how that goes.

Also watch the frets, many of those 70's LP's have the frets filed way too flat and are hard to play. I have seen very few (maybe none) mid-late seventies LP's that didn't need a fret job.

FWIW, I have owned 6 seventies LP's over the years (mix of Customs, Standards, Deluxes) and every one was disappointing. Just recently I got a new LP Traditional Plus, and it decimated every one of the seventies LP's in every way; tone, fit, finish, weight, appearance, quality of the fret job, pickup quality, everything. There was nothing the seventies LP's had over the new one, nothing at all. Just sayin...

make sure you check the weight. i had a 70s LP that must've weighed like 14lbs.
