I would dig Slayer 200% more if it wasnt for........

THE SOLOS

Reign in blood is one of my fave albums of all time, but I dread the moments when the guitar solos start. You take a classic track like angel of death , what a monster tune and it just hits you square between the eyes rhythmically and vocally. Then the solos start and its tuneless, melody-less, phraseless, toneless exhibition of play anything old thing as fast as you can with no absolutely no variation in pace, taste .......anything !!

You can skip to any slayer track and those solos are all the same tuneless meanderings and whammy bar up and down antics that just give me a sore bloody head.

Id love if it those 2 guitarists just didnt solo and imo the songs would be 100% better done this way. Does anybody who listens to slayer agree or disagree ?

I like Slayer's solos, they're a wild, chaotic band and normal solos just wouldn't sound right in their songs. Plus Kerry does have some fairly technical solos he can pull out. I think in War Ensamble there's a little tapping section he does.

I worked for slayer, setting up their rig once. Really nice guys, watched them from side stage, thought it sounded good. I remember just unloading wave afteR wave of fake amps to build a wall of amps. But I dont own any of their albums. I just wanted to be a name dropping jackass.

RiB is a great album in the genre and whatever they pulled off it worked. I will say some of solos are a wee bit non-musical at times but they are not playing jazz.

I recall a guitar mag interview many years ago where Kerry mentioned practicing along to Yngwie albums, almost boasting it was easy for him IIRC. Well, I never heard any of that in his solos and, despite the YJM haters, YJM is far more musical to my ears at those speeds. Same goes for Marty Friedman, Alex Skolnick and others from the great 80s shred period. Regardless RiB, SoL, and SotA all had some serious playing none the less.

You can't compare Skolnick to King & Hanneman

He may have practiced along to Yngwie albums but that doesn't mean he ever learned any licks.

I always felt like those often atonal solos were one of the ways you could hear the hardcore influence on Slayer. They remind me of some of the later period Ginn stuff with Black Flag -- just sped up.

I also have a hard time imagining Alex Skolnick's style of soloing fitting in well in Slayer tunes. Thrash has many voices, too.

Slayers solos are like abstract art. More "sound collages" than traditional solos. I also think they add to the songs and fit accordingly. In fact, they are totally appropriate for they're music's vibe.

However, I wouldn't want to hear those solos in most any other context or song...
