What's the deal with EMG pickups?

Active EMG pickups.

I've never used them, but a few players that I like do. Some of those players have great tone and are even bluesy. I've always thought of EMG's as being a metal heads pickup, am I wrong? Are they a pain in the ass to maintain and use?
Is there a common tonal character with these?
