What do you consider a thick finish?
I'm looking for an actual number here. I don't want any answers of opinion on what you think feels thick or thin based on the guitars anyone owns. There is so much talk of thin skin and thick poly finishes, but no one seems to actually know what thick is. I searched for a good bit on this.
I'm making my 8th guitar (which is actually a bass) for myself and I figured I'd do an experiment on how thick my finishes come out approximately. I taped off the control cavity except for a 1x1ish portion that'll be in between the pots just for this purpose. As I've been spraying the back that little square should get all of the finish that the back of the guitar gets which will be the thickest part of the finish. On this particular bass I'm basically doing a wineburst. Dying the front with black, sanding it back, and dying it dark red. Then I'll be doing the back, sides and burst on the top in black (acrylic lacquer). Then I'll be using a 2k catalyzed polyurethane clear from DuPont for a nice hard glossy finish. Bought the neck from Status Graphite (THESE NECKS RULE!!!) So, back to my original question: What is a "thin finish"; .005", .010?, .020"? What is a thick finish? |
