Need a solo chord/melody song to learn. Suggestions?
Just purchased my first hollowbody. I’d like to apply myself to learning a nice chord/melody song to play solo. I’m new at this sort of playing, but not a beginner at guitar. Can you suggest something that maybe has the tab and a video lesson?

I recommend you start with Barry Galbraith Chord Solos 1&2. You can find them on Amazon or several other websites.

I used to search for good basic, but melodic chord melody tabs myself.
This site was one of my faves. Yves Keroas has some nice commercial tunes by the Beatles and such... http://www.acousticfingerstyle.com/midifil5.htm Here, there, Everywhere was one of my faves. Fairy easy, but sounds great as a Solo Jazz performance.

No Greater Love is a good, solid tune to know. Not too complex, nice chord changes, catchy melody, tons of room to take a solo in whatever direction you want.
A bit uptempo, though not to fast. Just a good, relaxed swing.

Maybe try to create some of your own versions.. Take any song you like, learn the chords.. Then the melody, play em at the same time... Maybe swap out some chords with common substitutions.. Add some runs...trills, slides, slurs, Have fun with it.

Mel Bay has two books of Barry Galbraith arrangements of standards that are impeccable.
I can't tell you how many so-so published arrangements folks bring into lessons, invariably we start editing from the get-go. Not the case at all with Galbraith's exquisite arrangements.

I'll expound on my recommendation of the Barry Galbraith books. You didn't specify what type of music or whether your a pick or finger player. The Barry Galbraith arrangements work with pick or fingers, the arrangements are musical and the fingerings are relatively easy to play.
Another book if you are into more of a finger style is Jamie Findlay's book "miles Davis for Solo Guitar". These arrangements sound very good but they are more for the upper intermediate to advanced player. http://www.amazon.com/Miles-Davis-So...8&sr=1-1-fkmr0 http://www.amazon.com/Mel-Barry-Galb...6227283&sr=1-1 |

Another vote for Barry Galbraith! It doesn't get any better.
Johnny Smith is the best too. There are some of his in tab in a book by Sal Salvador, 'solo guitar classics' or something like that. |
