New Macbook Pro

My G4 Powerbook is on it's last legs. I've been wanting a Macbook Pro to run Pro Tools for a while but have been waiting for the announcement of a new MBP model, supposedly coming on Jun 11. The Ivy Bridge processor and the retina display sound great, but....no optical drive or CD. So.....current generation model or the new generation model?? Which will be better for running Pro Tools??

Do you do remote recording? If portability is not paramount, consider an iMac. Faster processors, faster hard drives, larger monitor & more room for memory expansion. Plus, I've always found audio editing with a trackpad to be brutal. I don't know what people find so enticing about Macbooks other than a possible "cool" factor.

It's not as easy to drag an iMac over to the greek coffee house two blocks over.

Yeah, I want a laptop. I have a PT home system. I want to be able to tune vocals on my back porch or program drums in a hotel room or go to someone's house for a vocal.......
This eases my mind a bit about the new generation MBP. More money though...

I'd go the late 2011/early 2012 model. The Ivy Bridge chips don't look as good as they are made out to be according to this article

http://hexus.net/tech/news/cpu/39369...-material-tim/

Also, just about any brand new release these days the first adopters end up being unpaid beta testers...
The current chips work well and ivy birdge isn't significantly better/faster. I remember reading that performance when dealing with audio is basically the same as the current chips (look on gearslutz, I believe it was tested by the ADK laptop guys)

No optical drive is a big draw back IMO as well because you will no longer be able to put a data doubler in and have 2 HDD's anymore... I love data doublers, no more dragging around and using up usb/firewire ports on external drives.
If you run protools you need the ilok in, if you run and interface as well that's either firewire gone or usb gone. Then add an external HDD and you're all out of ports (unless you use thunderbolt.)

Go the stable early 2012 MBP...

That belkin hub looks fancy! I want one.

Water those Begonias while you're at it.

I have a late 2011 MBP i7 and it runs everything! Display is great and if you really want to see it shine, an Apple Thunderbolt display looks great! The only issue I had was that it came loaded with Lion but Lion didn't play nice with my tethered Canon DSLR so I've had to go back to Snow Leopard, which really isn't all that bad!

I'd go with an older model, especially for firewire. Or check out an HP Elitebook and not have to worry about any of this...
