Another vote for don't waste your money on an inexpensive ABG. Best to use another acoustic guitar and let him/her hang out on the E and A strings.

I had an old Guild that was great, but I still had to dig in just to barely keep up with an acoustic guitar. Best I've found is the Halfling, but you would never catch me bringing that to a beach or campfire outing

I was in San Diego four days ago and could have picked up several for you. I'm in Los Angeles -- absolutely no problem finding one right around the corner from my downtown studio at Mariachi Plaza (Boyle Heights) or at Candelas guitars on Cesar Chaves (turns into Sunset Blvd as it heads west). And Musician's Friend has them for sale as well.

My impression is that acoustic bass guitars are a joke. I doubt even the most expensive ones will cut it, unless they are really big.

I wouldn't call them a joke. They can be nice instruments that play great, that produce nice interesting tones that no other type of bass can produce. They have one flaw, they aren't loud enough on their own. Neither are any of your electrics.

I tried a aeb out a few weeks ago that may be just loud enough for a beach get together. Under 200 is tough. This was a new Stagg that was the loudest AEB in the store. It was 250.00 new and also had a suprising good voice of its own plugged in. Your bass player probably wont be happy with the volume on any aeb but if you guys arent trying to drown him out ,this one might work.
