Thanks for that. And those damn wahs are so much $! Anyone know of the closest thing w/o the price tag? I assume NKT 275 Ge fuzz.

How different are the bassman amps? Between brown, black, silverface? You think an early silverface (late 60's) would cut it?

I remeber there was a thread on here about how the purple haze solo wasn't as much the octavia as people think and that they used one tape speeding up and one slowing down or something like that

One thing about these Hendrix threads, is there is a LOT of misinformation out there. At some point, I realized it's just better to chase the sound with your ears

True story though: I once sold a modern Vox Clyde McCoy wah on craigslist, and marketed it as "the same model Hendrix played." I get an email from some bozo cursing and telling me I'm a scammer and that he used a Crybaby (he then sent me a link to Dunlop's website for Hendrix' signature wah). I tried telling him that Hendrix probably used a number of different wahs throughout the years, then sent him a link with a picture of Hendrix' actual Clyde McCoy that was up for auction. He then emails back saying how his sister saw him in Milwaukee once and that I should do some research before I try and scam people.

One of the easiest paths to Hendrix' tone is the guitar's volume knob. Particularly on BOG you can hear the amount of fuzz increase and decrease. In "Who Knows" the Octavia really has the ring modulator sound which means he had his volume down and was using the neck pup. The "perfect" fuzz, vibe (that's my personal obsession), wah and Octavia should sound best when you're guitar is turned down some. Well, that's been my experience anyway. Low output pups seem to be helpful too.

Funny Story.. You should have told him the Vox and Crybaby were the same wah..That would have really messed with him..By the way I assume you know they are..

I figured I would try and meet him somewhere in the middle by saying that he used different wahs throughout his career, but he was having none of it!! lol

That's only on the outro. The solo was the Octavia. The flutey upper octave effect is undeniably the Octavia pedal. You can also hear it on Fire and One Rainy Wish. My favorite song where he uses the Octavia is Peace in Mississippi. He did the tape thing in quite a few songs actually, for instance the studio version of Star Spangled Banner. He also happens to be using the Octavia here as well:

I would think that the Fuzz was Si, but I really don't know. As far as the amp is concerned, I would stick with the old Brown Face Bassman Tweed with the 4X10's...

Voodoo Child (Slight Return) would have been germanium. The silicon version didn't come out until late 1968 (first with BC-183L transistors). ELL was released in October 1968. Another way to tell (on the VC solo) when he engages the wah it just adds more treble. There would be howling oscillation from the silicon FF when he used the wah with it. As heard on the later shows like Rainbow Bridge, Atlanta Pop Festival and Isle of Wight.
