which headphones to use with the pod hd500?

So wich headphones should I use with the Line 6 HD500?

I want something that translates well, something that sounds like it will over a PA and FRFR speaker (most often a QSC K10).

My situation... I live in an apartment with a baby on the way, so I need to play at either really low volume levels (if I can play at all), or through quality headphones. I much prefer the later. But they need to be affordable, it's easy to lay down some huge $$$ on gear. I was hoping $300 or less, but could see myself going $500 (it'll take a little time saving though...)

Our band has its own PA set up where we use QSCK10 speakers, and I thought I'd try out one of those as my personal monitor, see how it sounds before moving on to DT series amps or giving up on the whole modelling endeavor.

Thank you for your help!

overall i like to monitor through open-back headphones like akg k240s or k701s, but i find that distorted guitars benefit a little bit more from closed back headphones like sennheiser hd280s. its probably the way the bass and treble frequencies interact in a closed space that keeps things from falling apart. that's also a good way to get your bass frequencies to translate to a big system, which admittedly is very difficult with a modeller.

Don't get the sennheiser hd280s. Probably the worst for monitoring modeling I've encountered. You'll be happier with cheap drugstore headphones than those, seriously. Subdued lows and a prominent peak in the upper mids which can get fatiguing very quickly. Great phones for tracking when you need monitoring isolation (ex vocals) or for checking the mids and highs of a mix. Would never recommend them when monitoring a modeler is the primary use.

respectfully, i use the sennheiser pro hd280 and have no problems. tones translate pretty well for my applications but then, the reality is, it might take some experimentation to find the phones that translate well to any particular PA gear as each will have variations in freq. response. i also use an open style seenheiser...px100 ~$80 (model is something like that and they also translate well to the PA gear i've used).

I agree with Will.

These look promising. Reviews say they are good for rock. (I play alternative rock mostly)

According to reviews: " The general feel of the sound is the same as if you’re standing on stage in the middle of the performers...The bass has good presence and is clearly bumped up... Sound of electric guitars always jumps at you with energy, excitement and rawness not many other cans have"

Are the above good qualities to have in headphones when using them to make tones that will translate well to a PA system?

Never tried the Sennheiser HD280s, but the 580s (now 600s) are awesome. Have mixed entire records on them (not that I recommend mixing anything on headphones unless there's no other choice).

They're open-back though, so everyone in the room might hear a bit.
