Good point which brings me to my question, where are you going to bet your US$10K on - a set of ears that can hear MAGIC or a set of ears that can't?

less than $10K actually.

I'll go with Tom. I've played his guitars and compared to conversions and although not directly - a 57 Goldtop. I thought the Bartlett was EXTREMELY close.

So I'm doing a sell-off to get some $ together.

Alex,

I think the fine tuning of pickups is indeed a good thing. I wish I could have pickups fine-tuned for my guitar too. In fact that's what I'm doing now... I actually sent Jon Gundry an email 2 days ago to help me fine tune pickups for both my Bartlett LP and my conversion LP to really maximize the tonal characteristics of my guitars. It should make them even better.

I think it is also important to mention that the 59 les paul was not in optimal running condition when you heard it. That was in fact why I went to visit the luthier to begin with (and you just happened to be there as well). I wanted to get it set up to better playing conditions.

The guitar sounds even better now. I have a clip done by a friend with the new set up and I think it sounds fantastic in that clip even with dead strings and pickups that could even be better matched with the guitar.

I know other people who have logged good time with bursts and know that Tom's guitars are spot on.

As for me, it can only get better tonally from here, especially when I drop Throbaks in there and replace the bridge pot in my conversion which has already been damaged over the years and only goes to about 8.5 instead of 10 hence limiting the output of the growl on my bridge pup.

Definitely a good time to be a guitarist these years!

CD if you only lived near me, you would be playing this one by now. Maybe JBLPplayer will get the chance to play it when he drops by my part of the world, and he can be the one to tell you about it

Take care CD

I came verrrrrry close to pulling the trigger for a Bartlett Goldtop build. They are very compettitive with GY pricing. But I decided I would try and build my own, that was before I ran into the wall of prices for tools here in Europe.
