I've played both guitars and they're awesome! You can't go wrong with either.

Its Gils way of doing the checking, razor blade and some other methods
You'll need to consult him for details.
The results, as can be seen, are very authentic lookin

Interesting!

So has Gil worked on any real bursts or just plans?

I have seen Tom's work first hand but am curious about Gil's work and how much experience he has with real bursts

Thanks in advance

Gil spent more than a decade in LA as a luthier during the nintees and had lots of original Les pauls strats tele's experience including bursts.
check out his Les paul build thread on TDPRI - you don't get to such detailed intimacy with a guitar in correspondance...

Impressive

Goodasaf, is this you over in this thread? Tom refinned a real burst and there were some interesting comments. And yes it is a real burst. Not mine though (I WISH!!).

Both Tom and Gil look like they make great guitars! I don't see the need to bash either one of them frankly.

Interesting thread. Can someone explain why there is such a howl about the diff between two builders, who obviously take their respective time/effort with each piece?

It would seem both builders would produce a premium instrument that sounds exceptional...?

Agreed, both guitars would be great. And who knows maybe only 5-10 people in total have actually tried both.

At the price points for these instruments folks probably want to get the "best"
It is hard to try them out before hand, so others' experience is important.

You can see other threads comparing Thorn and Suhr, ect. - both great builders. Which is better for you? Depends on what you value most. Unlikely you would be disappointed with either
